PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Thomas Tom (ranked 4670 p4p, 4669 weight class) and Will Gates (ranked 262 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Thomas Tom!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Will Gates!
The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Topper Green and Eliza Hachem.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Tom clinches up against the cage.
Tom jumps guard but Gates stands there with Tom around his waist. Tom gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Gates breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Horrible takedown attempt by Gates or perhaps it was just good defense by Tom, which made it look bad.
Gates throws a head kick that misses.
Tom fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
And Gates tries to counter it with a takedown but Tom pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Tom takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Tom looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Gates is fending him off so far but Tom persists. Nope, Gates circles away and we're back to standing.
Tom changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Gates tries to avoid it but Tom manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Gates to the ground. Gates escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Thomas Tom. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Gates gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Gates tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Gates pulls guard successfully.
Gates lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Gates stands and steps away. Tom gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Tom slips under a jab.
Tom tries to close the distance and clinch but Gates swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Gates takes the fight into the clinch.
Tom wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Gates has him pressed against the cage.

Gates manages to pull guard.

Gates uses the cage to get back to his feet.

Tom tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Gates paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Gates takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Tom fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Gates shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Tom sprawls well. Tom wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gates gets slowly back to his feet.
A right-left combo lands from Gates.

It looks like Thomas Tom has been cut.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Tom is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Tom shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Gates defends it nicely.
Tom keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Tom doesn't manage to clinch there - Gates circles away.
A solid leg kick lands there for Gates.
Gates is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

and Gates counters with a nice uppercut.

Tom tries to keep at a distance but Gates has taken the fight into the clinch.
Gates is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Tom pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Gates lands with a kick to the temple. Tom shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Gates leaves Tom with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Tom throws a series of punches but Gates avoids them all with ease.
Gates fails with a takedown attempt.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Tom's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Tom tries to clinch there but Gates circles away.
Tom throws a leg kick but Gates sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Tom shoots for a takedown but Gates saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Gates shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Tom but Tom pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Gates lands with a slapping head kick.
Gates is breathing heavily.

Tom gets control of Gates's arms and successfully pulls guard. Tom will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Tom has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Gates off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Tom walks forward, straight into a front kick from Gates.
Tom stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Tom wants it to stay on the feet.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Tom scores with a shot to the body.
Tom tries to clinch but Gates is having none of it.
Tom fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Tom shoots for a double leg takedown but Gates sprawls well. He's pushed Tom's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Tom is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.

Will Gates showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Gates manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.

Tom misses with a hook to the ribs.
Tom is pressed up against the cage. Gates has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Tom down to the mat. Tom avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Tom tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Gates paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Gates let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.

and Gates holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Tom is trying hard to land a takedown here. Gates sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Tom throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gates's waist but Gates gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Tom off to one side.

Gates is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Tom wants to break the clinch but can't.
Tom prevents the takedown attempt.

Gates drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Tom gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Gates can't find room to land a body shot as Tom controls the action.
Tom fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Gates has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Tom tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Gates avoids it.
Kneeeeees! The crowd are calling for knees to the body. Gates obliges.

Gates decides to pull guard.
Gates trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.
Tom knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Gates on the ground.
Gates pulls Tom in close to prevent any damage.
Gates utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Tom has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Gates is proving hard to escape from.

Gates manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Gates stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Gates wants it to stay on the feet.
The fight stays on the outside here - Tom looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
No luck for Tom with that takedown attempt.

And that's the end of the fight!
Will Gates comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Gates has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
