PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Carlos Severo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Andre Giannini (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Severo kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Hallowed Be Thy Name. Carlos Severo has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Daniel Cesar and Edson Gomes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Severo gets caught flat footed, as Giannini shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Severo looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!
Giannini controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Giannini looking to pass the guard.
Giannini must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Giannini gets to his feet - Severo follows without any prompting.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Severo is really struggling to control Giannini but he's trying to hold on to the position.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Severo is on top in guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Severo slips a jab and a cross from Giannini.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Severo fails with the takedown
and Giannini counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Giannini shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Giannini postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Severo is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Giannini, into his guard.
Severo is working Giannini over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Giannini wants to stand up but Severo is controlling him.

Severo gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Giannini counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Severo's guard now.
Severo controls Giannini momentarily but Giannini frees himself.
Giannini with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Giannini works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Giannini decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Severo tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Giannini changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Severo looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Severo working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Giannini doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Giannini manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Severo will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Severo has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Giannini can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Severo is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Giannini is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Severo had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Giannini is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Severo Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Giannini's back instead.

Severo is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Giannini knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Giannini for a finish.

Giannini really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Severo. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Giannini turns into Severo and is now in his guard.
Severo is trying to control the position but Giannini postures up.

Severo has his foot on Giannini's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Giannini works his way back into a safe position though.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Giannini drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Giannini jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Severo pushes Giannini off and scrambles back to his feet.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Severo.

Severo is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Giannini knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Severo wants to finish this one by submission but Giannini is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Severo.

Giannini tries to lock up and control but Severo gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

I would just about give that final round to Andre Giannini.
Well Giannini has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
