PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between John Harper (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Oshjia Oyaki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Harper!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Oshjia Oyaki!
The judges for this bout are George Francis, Robert Twigg and Tiny Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Harper thows a body shot but no joy.
Harper ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Oyaki moves away.

Oyaki shoots in and bounces Harper off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Harper looking for a guillotine here but Oyaki defends easily.
Harper wants to sweep but no luck.
Oyaki trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Harper wants to sweep but no luck.

Harper escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Oyaki gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Harper keeping moving, preventing Oyaki from controlling successfully.
Oyaki in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Harper isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Oyaki stacks Harper on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Oyaki!

Oyaki wants to lay and pray for a moment but Harper keeps working.
Harper tries to bench press Oyaki off him but Oyaki keeps the position.

Oyaki swings around for an armbar but Harper sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Oyaki's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Harper trying to control the position from guard on top but Oyaki is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Oyaki looking for a guillotine here but Harper defends easily.

Oyaki looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Harper wants to pass the guard but Oyaki is keeping the position.

Harper decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Oyaki, up you get!
Harper jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
Harper misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Harper throws a right hand that Oyaki ducks under and follows up with a left that Oyaki also avoids with ease.

Harper gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Oyaki stops Harper from standing up.

Oyaki drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Oyaki jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Harper is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Harper wants to sweep but no luck.

Harper has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Oyaki can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Oyaki passes Harper's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Oyaki seems to be looking for submissions.
Harper is staying active underneath Oyaki, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Harper gets full guard.

Harper wants to stand but Oyaki is controlling the position.
Oyaki trying to control but Harper is working from the bottom.
Harper has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

A close round but Oshjia Oyaki will probably get the nod.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Harper pulls Oyaki in close to prevent any damage.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Oyaki avoids the body shot from Harper.
Harper looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Harper bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Harper decides to stand back up. Harper steps back and let's Oyaki get back to his feet.
Oyaki fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Oyaki avoids a punch combination nicely.
Oyaki dodges the punch combination from Harper.

No joy there for Harper, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Oyaki fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Harper sprawls well initially but Oyaki persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Oyaki is trying to control the action in half guard but Harper is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Harper kicks Oyaki off and gets back to his feet.
Harper fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Oyaki looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Oyaki dodges the punch combination from Harper.
Harper throws a hook but Oyaki avoids it easily.

Harper tries to clinch up.
Harper misses with a jab, cross combination.
Harper thows a body shot but no joy.
Oyaki with a poor takedown
and Oyaki takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
John Harper seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Harper throws a right and a left that Oyaki avoids nicely.

and Oyaki counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Harper!
Harper's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.

Oyaki is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Harper has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Oyaki can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Harper is looking to escape.

Oyaki is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Harper is surviving well by controlling Oyaki's body position as best he can.
Harper tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Harper tries to hold on but Oyaki pushes him away.

Harper is trying desperately to improve position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Oshjia Oyaki showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Oyaki takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
No luck for Oyaki with that takedown attempt.
Horrible takedown by Oyaki or perhaps it was just good defense by Harper which made him look bad.
Oyaki walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Oyaki drops his hands momentarily and Harper takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
A cross from Harper lands.
Harper works over Oyaki's head and body with a nice combination.
Oyaki circles away from the clinch attempt

and Oyaki counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Oyaki prevents Harper from improving his position.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Oyaki seems to be looking for submissions.
Harper gets full guard.
Harper is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Oyaki is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Harper is trying to work for a kimura but Oyaki is defending well.
Harper wants to take a breather but Oyaki is having none of it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Harper stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Harper misses with a straight left.
Harper lands a body shot.
Oyaki showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Harper.
Harper throws a shot from downtown. Oyaki moves away and avoids it.
Oyaki fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
John Harper has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Oshjia Oyaki.
Oyaki shoots in looking for a takedown. Harper tries to sprawl out of it but Oyaki keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Harper manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Oyaki takes a shot right to the bread basket.

Oyaki fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Harper cracks Oyaki with an open hand slap.
Oyaki has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Oyaki tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Harper throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Harper throws a looping overhand right but Oyaki ducks down to avoid it.

and Oyaki counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Harper!
Harper is squirming around, avoiding Oyaki's attempts to control the action.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Oyaki breaks from Harper's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Harper keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Oshjia Oyaki is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Oshjia Oyaki has got the better of the ground game so far.
Oyaki trying to control but Harper is having none of it.

Oyaki is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Harper is surviving well by controlling Oyaki's body position as best he can.

Oyaki has hold of Harper's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Harper manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to John Harper.
I think Oyaki has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
