PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Fred Portos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Diogo Rubin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Portos closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Rubin is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Portos pulls his head out easily.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Portos connects with a nice short shot to Rubin's temple.

Portos has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Rubin tries to reverse the position but Portos maintains control.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Rubin fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Portos manages to avoid it.

Portos feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Rubin wants to stand up but Portos is controlling him.

Rubin wants to clinch up but Portos keeps it at a distance.

Rubin manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Portos manages to get himself to full guard.

Rubin sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Portos's guard.

Portos wants to control the action here but instead Rubin manages to pass to full mount!
Portos is wriggling around trying to escape.

Portos wants to hold on but Rubin pushes him away.

Rubin is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Portos has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Portos is in all sorts of trouble here.

Rubin is working for a guillotine from mount but Portos frees his head quite easily.
Rubin misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Rubin pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

Rubin goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Portos is on top in guard.

Rubin is looking for a triangle but Portos pushes his legs off easily.

Rubin looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Portos wants to pass the guard but Rubin is keeping the position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Rubin had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Portos is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Rubin Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Portos's back instead.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Rubin patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here?
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Diogo Rubin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Rubin takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Rubin gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Portos makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Rubin really felt that one!

Portos shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Rubin is looking to get to half guard.
Rubin tries to lock up and control but Portos gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Portos blocks Rubin's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.
Portos tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Rubin working to try and regain half guard.

Portos is standing up, even though he is in mount.
A big right from Rubin misses.
Rubin shoots and misses

and Portos decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Rubin's guard.

Rubin has his foot on Portos's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Portos works his way back into a safe position though.

Rubin wants to sweep but no luck.
Portos has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Portos is posturing up here but Rubin has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Portos tries to roll out but it's too tight and Portos has to tap! Slick submission there by Rubin!
