PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between James Cole (ranked 237 p4p, 355 weight class) and Randy Randalman (ranked 35 p4p, 52 weight class). Randalman has chosen Creedence Clearwater - Fortunate Son as his entrance music. Randy Randalman told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 26 - 13 - 3, fighting out of New York, James Cole!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Randy Randalman!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Yves DeLean and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Randalman fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Cole, pushing him back against the cage.
Randalman is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Cole gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Cole lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage.

Cole escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Nice shot lands for Cole.
Cole bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Randalman's head backwards.
Randalman shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Cole defends it nicely.
Randalman fails with a takedown attempt.
James Cole has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Randy Randalman.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

and Cole makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Randalman shoots in for a takedown but Cole shows good takedown defense.

and Cole counters with a crisp one two that drops Randalman! Cole thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Randalman to his feet! Randalman is in big trouble!

Randalman drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Cole is trying to control the position but Randalman postures up.
Cole has Randalman pulled in close to control his posture.

Randalman pushing down on Cole's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Randalman looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Cole with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Cole moves into full guard.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Cole holds on and takes a little breather.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Randalman wants to pass the guard but Cole is keeping the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Randalman wants to control from the top but Cole keeps moving.
Cole pulls Randalman in to control the position.
Randalman must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Randalman wants to pass the guard but Cole is keeping the position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Randalman shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Cole is trying to defend but Randalman finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that James Cole will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Randalman connects with a nice short shot to Cole's temple.

Cole has his foot on Randalman's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Randalman works his way back into a safe position though.

Randy Randalman showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

With the fighters up against the cage, Cole throws an elbow but misses.

Cole pushes off an throws an elbow but Randalman leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.

Cole lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.
