PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between James Roy (ranked 4557 p4p, 4421 weight class) and Larry Baker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, James Roy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Larry Baker!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Blasius, Patrick Alders and Paulsen Ambrosius.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Roy pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Baker is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
Roy keeps the fight on the outside.

Baker bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Baker trying to control the action but Roy is working from the bottom.
Roy manages to work his way to half guard, despite Baker's best efforts.
Baker is keen to just control but Roy is a slippery customer.
Roy wants to get back to full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Baker keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Roy pushes Baker off looking to stand but Baker dives back in and keeps control.

Baker perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Baker wants to stand but Roy has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Baker dives in and scores a takedown into Roy's guard.
Roy wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Baker manages to pass to side control.

Baker sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Roy defending well though.
Baker tries to stand and escape but Roy actually recovers to full guard.
Roy has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Baker has passed into side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Baker is trying to get an arm triangle but Roy is defending well.
Roy tries to bench press Baker off him but Baker keeps the position.
Baker lands an elbow.
Baker trying to control the action but Roy is working from the bottom.
Roy prevents Baker from improving position.

Baker landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.
Roy strikes from the bottom but Baker takes advantage and advances to full mount!
Roy is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Baker throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.
Roy is looking to get to half guard.
Baker controlling his opponent.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Roy is looking to get to half guard.
Roy knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Baker on the ground.
Baker trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Roy wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Baker has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Roy has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Roy is really stuck here.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Larry Baker dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Baker drives through with a takedown into Roy's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Roy manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.
Roy has Baker pressed against the cage.

Roy breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Roy takes the fight into the clinch.
Baker tries to land knees in the clinch but Roy avoids the damage to the body.
Baker content to slow the pace in the clinch.
Roy is looking to control Baker's arms but Baker gets an underhook and turns him. Now Roy has his back to the cage.
Baker has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Baker misses with a punch to the body.
Baker stops a takedown attempt from Roy.
Roy is pushing Baker up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.

Roy tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Roy lands an elbow inside.
A bit of stalling here from Roy.

Roy breaks the clinch.

Roy gets a double leg takedown into Baker's guard.
Baker is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Baker is working an open guard so Roy takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Nice takedown defense from Roy. No joy for Baker on that attempt.
Roy misses with a few strikes there.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Baker avoids the head kick by Roy.
A little jabbing left from Baker on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

Baker drives through with a takedown into Roy's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Roy wants to sweep but no luck.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Baker forces his way into half guard.
Baker controlling the pace.
Roy is looking to escape.
Roy won't allow Baker to pass to mount.
Baker sitting and controlling from the half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Baker wants to pass the guard but Roy is defending well.
Roy is looking for a sweep. Baker is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Baker perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Nice takedown defense from Roy. No joy for Baker on that attempt.

Baker moves into the clinch.
Baker wants to get back to striking at distance but Roy won't allow it.
Roy working some nice short punches in the clinch.
Baker drops down looking for an ankle pick but Roy pulls his leg out and moves away.
James Roy has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Larry Baker.
Roy pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Roy throws a body kick despite being completely out of range

and Baker holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Baker is trying to force a seperation but Roy has the dominant position.

Roy breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Baker shoots for a takedown but Roy saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Baker is breathing heavily.
Baker shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Roy pinned against the cage. Roy gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

James Roy dominated that second round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Roy missing with a left hand there. Baker was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
A kick lands to the mid section there for Roy.
Roy fails in his attempt to clinch.
Roy throws a half hearted mid kick.

Roy closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Baker did well to prevent Roy getting side control.
Roy lands with a punch from half guard.
Baker moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Baker is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Roy working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Roy trying to control but Baker is working from the bottom.
Baker seems keen to control Roy's posture.
Roy postures up.
Baker doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Baker keeps the fight on the outside.
Roy shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Baker as he avoids it easily.
Baker tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Roy gets caught flat footed, as Baker shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Roy is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Baker dives into side control.

Roy is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Baker takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Roy wants to control but Baker is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Roy is trying to control Baker's posture. Baker takes advantage of the lull and advances to side control. He also appears to have an arm triangle here! Uh oh, big trouble for Roy! Baker is rotating here... this could be the end... Roy is out! Baker has ended this one emphatically! Great submission!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:53 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Larry Baker!
