PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Danny Johnson (ranked 5338 p4p, 6137 weight class) and Brendan Rowen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Johnson's entrance music is Eminem-8 Mile. A fine choice. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Danny Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Brendan Rowen!
The judges for this bout are Ron Honeybunn, Ben Hemmingworth and Winston Howard.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson closes the distance and clinches up with Rowen, looking for a takedown. Johnson pushes Rowen against the cage but Rowen circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Rowen changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Johnson misses with an uppercut

and Rowen counters with a single leg into guard. Johnson didn't expect that.
Johnson manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Rowen manages to get himself to full guard.

Rowen wants to stand up but Johnson is controlling him.

Johnson gets to his feet - Rowen follows without any prompting.
Rowen steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Johnson.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Johnson misses with a hook.
Rowen tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

and Rowen counters with a nice double leg into side control. Johnson won't be happy with that.

Johnson really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Johnson is trying to maintain the position but Rowen is very close to passing his half guard.

Rowen really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Johnson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Johnson is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.

Rowen is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Johnson is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a triangle but Rowen frees his head nicely. Oh but Johnson has switched to an armbar! Rowen is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
