PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Eric Draven (ranked 1427 p4p, 2076 weight class) and Glen Hoddle (ranked 193 p4p, 259 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 35 - 20 - 2, fighting out of Sydney, Eric Draven!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Glen Hoddle!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Robert Twigg and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A jab from Hoddle misses.
Hoddle thows a leg kick but Draven checks it

and Draven moves into the clinch.
Draven blocking some punches.

Draven breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Draven pulls Hoddle into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hoddle trying to control but Draven is working from the bottom.
Hoddle with a nice head shot there.
Draven utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Hoddle trying to control the position from guard on top but Draven is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Draven working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Hoddle doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Hoddle manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Hoddle accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Hoddle stands up over Draven, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Draven is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Hoddle is in close to Draven's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Hoddle lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Draven pulls Hoddle in close to prevent any damage.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hoddle is in close to Draven's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Draven has his foot on Hoddle's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Hoddle works his way back into a safe position though.
Hoddle working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Draven's head.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Hoddle's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Hoddle wants to control from the top but Draven keeps moving.
Hoddle lands a couple of elbows.
Hoddle landing with the ground and pound.
Hoddle postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Draven escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Hoddle gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Hoddle keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Draven's head.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hoddle throws a big elbow that misses.
Hoddle cracks Draven with a solid left hand.
Hoddle missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Hoddle landing some decent shots from guard.
Hoddle works over Draven with some ground and pound from guard.
Hoddle is looking to work some ground and pound but Draven has wrist control.
Hoddle postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Draven looking for a guillotine here but Hoddle defends easily.
Hoddle wants to control from the top but Draven keeps moving.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Hoddle stands up over Draven, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Hoddle content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Draven has locked up a guillotine! Draven's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Hoddle is holding on here and Draven must be using up a lot of energy. Hoddle has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Draven gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:33 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Eric Draven!
In his post fight interview, Eric Draven started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
