PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Shen Po (ranked 386 p4p, 283 weight class) and James Hunt (ranked 58 p4p, 45 weight class). Po comes to the cage accompanied by Ei-tetsu Hayashi & 木下伸市. The fight MMA fans around the world have waited their entire lives for!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Shen Po!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, James Hunt!
The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Hirohito Nitta and Yasuomi Hirokawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Po tries to score a power double leg takedown but Hunt sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Po somewhat.
A little jabbing left from Hunt on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Po shoots in looking for a takedown but Hunt manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Po's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Po with a hook.
Shen Po seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Po connects with a body shot.
Hunt on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Po catches Hunt with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Po swings for the body but Hunt moves out of range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Po fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Hunt manages to avoid it.

Po closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Hunt's guard.

Po stopping the sweep attempt from Hunt.
Po postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Po looking to pass the guard.
Hunt controls Po momentarily but Po frees himself.
Po passes Hunt's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Hunt is staying active underneath Po, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Po has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Po working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Hunt's thigh. Hunt counters though and makes it back to full guard.
Hunt has control of Po's left arm, preventing Po from doing any damage.
Hunt tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Hunt is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Po trying to control but Hunt is working from the bottom.
We've been hearing good reports from Po's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
Hunt looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Po stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hunt swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Po passes easily into side control. Nice work.

Po looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Po wants to lay and pray for a moment but Hunt keeps working.
An elbow from Po crashes against the mat.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
You can see the frustration on Hunt's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Po is looking to take a break and control but Hunt is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Hunt tries to bench press Po off him but Po keeps the position.
Po taking a breather here.

Po looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Hunt tries to improve position but can't.
Hunt can't do much from the bottom here.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Po advances nicely into full mount.
Hunt is squirming around, avoiding Po's attempts to control the action.
Hunt has given up his back here.
Po struggling to keep hold of the position.

Po is persistently looking for the submission but Hunt is defending it well.
Po is hanging on to Hunt's back as he tries to escape.

Po is looking for the choke from the back position but Hunt is controlling his hands well.

Hunt preventing the rear naked choke attempt from Po.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Hunt wants to get back to his feet.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Shen Po dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

A head kick misses from Hunt.
Po with a nice cross.
Po lands with a good body shot.
Hunt takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Hunt takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Hunt takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Po fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
Po lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Po thuds a left hand into Hunt's body.
Hunt takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Po scores with a nice strike.
A left lands for Hunt.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Po bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
A slow jab from Po misses its intended target.
Po throws a right hand that misses
and Hunt counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Hunt dips to his left and cracks Po with an uppercut!

Po is rocked!
Po is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Hunt can do to turn this around?
Hunt ducks down into range and throws a picture perfect right hook that connects with Po's jaw. Po's eyes stare off into space as he falls to the mat, out cold! Hunt does the decent thing and steps back, rather than landing any shots to his unconscious opponent.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:32 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). James Hunt!
