Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Dave Thompson (ranked 1171 p4p, 2147 weight class) and Maksim Taranin (ranked 129 p4p, 220 weight class). Thompson comes to the cage accompanied by Emmure - Nemesis. Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world!

And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Maksim Taranin!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Igor Prikhodko and Illya Tyunina.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Thompson looks to score with a jab to the body but Taranin is just out of range.
Thompson uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Taranin.
A combination from Thompson does no damage.
Thompson stuffs the takedown attempt from Taranin. Taranin gets slowly back to his feet.
Taranin shoots in for a takedown but Thompson shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Taranin fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Thompson manages to avoid it.
Taranin dodges the punch combination from Thompson.
Taranin wants to counter the offense by Thompson and move into the clinch position.
Thompson does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Taranin steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Thompson.
Thompson will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Taranin shoots in for a takedown but Thompson shows good takedown defense.
Dave Thompson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Maksim Taranin.
Thompson misses with a left hand

and Taranin counters with a shoot takedown. Thompson fights it but they end up in guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Taranin drops back looking for a leg! Thompson is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Thompson manages to kick Taranin off! Taranin jumps back into Thompson's guard.
Taranin tries to free his leg and advance position but Thompson is retaining full guard.

Taranin stays in close to Thompson's body and controls the position.
Taranin stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Thompson swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Thompson is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Taranin dives into side control.
The ground and pound from Taranin seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

Taranin thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Taranin is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Thompson is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Thompson is trying to buck Taranin off.
Thompson takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Taranin prevents Thompson from escaping the position.

Thompson trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.
Taranin landing strikes.
Thompson knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Taranin on the ground.

Thompson bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!

and Taranin counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Thompson!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Thompson wants to get back to his feet but Taranin drags him back down.

Thompson on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Thompson tries to get out of the position.

Thompson is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Taranin has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Taranin tries for a kimura but Thompson is defending well.

Taranin has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Thompson is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Taranin yanks on the arm and Thompson is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Taranin.

Maksim Taranin is the new featherweight champion!
Maksim Taranin decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
