PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Der Hund (ranked 21258 p4p, 24487 weight class) and James Cortes (ranked 574 p4p, 530 weight class). Hund kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Dogs of War. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Der Hund!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, James Cortes!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Micheangelo Fripello and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

A momentary lapse in concentration from Hund enables Cortes to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Hund manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Cortes wants to control from the top but Hund keeps moving.
Hund has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Cortes is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cortes wants to stand but Hund is controlling his posture from full guard.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Cortes is trying to control Hund's posture but Hund avoids it.
Hund wants to control but Cortes is keeping him busy.

Hund decides to stand up, so the ref orders Cortes to his feet.
Cortes shoots in for a takedown but Hund shows good takedown defense.

Cortes changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Hund looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Hund can't do much from the bottom here.

Cortes wants to control but Hund is keeping him busy.
Hund is looking to regain half guard here but Cortes keeps moving and retains side control.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Cortes is staying active underneath Hund, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Hund is working for an americana but Cortes has been sneaky and has managed to get back to half guard, whilst Hund was thinking about the submission.

Cortes wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Cortes keeping moving, preventing Hund from controlling successfully.

Hund with a flurry of punches that miss.
Hund wants to control from the top but Cortes keeps moving.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Hund closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Hund lands in his opponent's guard.

Hund stands and steps away. Cortes gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Cortes shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Hund but Hund pushes him off and we're back to square one.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hund fails with an attempt to clinch.
Hund throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Hund misses with a knee to the head.
Cortes is trying to pull guard but Hund has him pressed against the cage.
Cortes is trying to force a seperation but Hund has the dominant position.

Cortes pulls Hund into guard.
Hund content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Cortes tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Hund with a nice head shot there.

Hund gets to his feet - Cortes follows without any prompting.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Hund is defended easily by Cortes.
Hund sets himself, and Cortes steps forward looking for the clinch! Hund avoids it this time.
Hund looks for a takedown but Cortes sprawls well.

Cortes shoots for a double leg takedown but Hund sprawls well. He's pushed Cortes's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Der Hund has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Cortes.

Cortes closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Hund quickly recovers to half guard.

Hund has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Cortes is on him like a limpet, forcing Hund back against the cage.
Cortes is breathing heavily.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Cortes stops a takedown attempt from Hund.
Cortes wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Hund has him pressed against the cage.

Hund breaks from the clinch.

Cortes gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Cortes jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Hund walks away with a smile on his face. Cortes gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
The fight stays on the outside here - Hund looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Cortes has closed the distance and engaged Hund in a clinch.
Cortes scores with an uppercut up the middle.
Hund landing knees to the body.
Hund landing some nice looking knees to the body.

Hund breaks the clinch.

Hund gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Hund is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Cortes trying to keep a closed guard but Hund is proving a slippery customer.
Hund tries to free his leg and advance position but Cortes is retaining full guard.

Hund slips nicely into half guard.
Hund thows a huge punch but Cortes dodges it nicely.
Cortes is not content to let Hund control the position.

Hund decides to stand up.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


Hund dives in and scores a takedown into Cortes's guard.
Cortes looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Hund puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Hund is trying to control. Cortes wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Hund is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Cortes can do to turn this around?

Cortes is trying to maintain the position but Hund is very close to passing his half guard.
Hund perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Hund works his foot free and advances to mount.
Cortes takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Cortes working to try and regain half guard.
Hund lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Der Hund overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Hund scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Cortes?

Hund has hold of Cortes's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Cortes manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Hund connects with a couple of good shots from mount.

Cortes is rocked!

It looks like James Cortes has been cut.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hund has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Cortes's face.
Cortes is still in real trouble! Can Hund finish him?
Hund loads up with a big shot that hurts Cortes! He's pulled Hund in close but Hund has postured up and lands more strikes. Can Cortes survive? More strikes from Hund and Cortes is out! The ref jumps in to save him! Brutal ground and pound!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:32 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Der Hund!
An out of breath Der Hund thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
