PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Alexander Cotilla (ranked 744 p4p, 2019 weight class) and Martin Johnston (ranked 118 p4p, 285 weight class). Johnston is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Dacw 'Nghariad. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Alexander Cotilla!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Martin Johnston!
The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, Bruno Lombardi and Franklyn Lucas.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cotilla clinches.

Cotilla breaks the clinch.
Johnston walks into a jab.
Cotilla moves out of range as Johnston strikes.
Johnston tries to clinch there but Cotilla circles away.

Cotilla forces Johnston back against the cage and clinches.
Johnston tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Cotilla smiles and moves away.

Cotilla moves into the clinch successfully.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Johnston tries to pull guard but Cotilla holds him up against the cage and eventually Johnston drops back down to his feet.
Cotilla pushes Johnston back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.

Cotilla pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Cotilla instigates a clinch.
Cotilla slows down the pace here.
Johnston jumps guard but Cotilla stands there with Johnston around his waist. Johnston gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Cotilla is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range.

It looked like Cotilla wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Cotilla tries to close the distance and clinch up but Johnston swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Cotilla throws a combination. Johnston tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Cotilla keeps the fight on the outside.

Johnston is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Cotilla's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

Johnston is trying to stand up here but Cotilla is controlling him well.
Johnston has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Cotilla is working away from the top position though.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Cotilla in particular looking to stall.

Cotilla moves into range and clinches up with Johnston.
Johnston has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Cotilla is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Johnston tries to pull guard but Cotilla won't allow it.

Johnston shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Cotilla napping and manages to drive through into side control!

I really don't envy Cotilla right now.

A slapping leg kick lands for Cotilla.
Cotilla clobbers Johnston with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.

Johnston shoots for a takedown but Cotilla saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Alexander Cotilla seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
In defeat, Martin Johnston stepped up to the mic, saying 'I just want to apologise to all the boys back home. I let you down. I'll be back, bigger and better I promise you.'.
