The judges for this bout are Viktor Lagutenko, Fedor Mirinova and Aleksei Zolotukhin.

Fred fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Fred shoots for a takedown but Merel saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

and Merel counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Merel is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Fred doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Merel.

Merel is looking for a kimura but Fred is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Merel to get the leverage.

Merel looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.

Fred is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Merel is defending well though. Fred let's go of the attempt for now.

Fred is trying to stick to Merel's back but Merel is turning into Fred. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Fred's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Merel.

Merel goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Fred has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Merel but great work by Fred.

Merel can't do much from the bottom here.

Merel is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Merel has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.

Fred is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.

Merel is in a bad position with Fred working for a choke. Merel manages to spin nicely into guard and the danger is over for the moment.

Fred lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Merel is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Fred wants to improve his position but Merel is controlling well.

Fred is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Fred is looking to get back to full guard here but Merel has managed to pass to side control instead.

Fred tries to roll over but Merel keeps him under control.
Merel seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Fred does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Fred is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Merel stalling away here and it's allowed Fred to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Merel stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Fred swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Fred wants to sweep but no luck.

Merel is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Fred content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Merel has locked up a guillotine! Merel's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Fred is holding on here and Merel must be using up a lot of energy. Fred has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Merel gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!
