PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Henry (ranked 4131 p4p, 4126 weight class) and Maymo Mayor (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, John Henry!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Maymo Mayor!
The judges for this bout are Bart Greer, Michael Johnstone and Peter Branson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Henry stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Henry wants it to stay on the feet.
Mayor misses with a takedown attempt - Henry sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Mayor closes this distance looking for a takedown but Henry circles away.
John Henry has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Maymo Mayor.

Mayor has closed the distance and engaged Henry in a clinch.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Mayor.
Henry is trying to stall.
Henry is trying to push Mayor away but Mayor has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Henry is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

A nice left hand lands by Mayor.

Mayor tries to pull guard but Henry holds him up against the cage and eventually Mayor drops back down to his feet.

Mayor keeping moving, preventing Henry from controlling successfully.

Henry drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Henry jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Henry trying to control the position from guard on top but Mayor is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Henry pushing down on Mayor's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Henry missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Henry is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Mayor wants to control but Henry is keeping busy.
Mayor is trying to control but Henry manages to pass to mount!
Mayor wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Henry.
Mayor really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Henry. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Henry tries to control but Mayor wriggling away.
Mayor is in all sorts of trouble here.
Mayor avoids a series of strikes thrown by Henry.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Henry misses with a head shot.
Henry throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.
Henry avoids the attempt from Mayor to control.
Henry sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.

Henry looking to control but Mayor is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Henry will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Henry thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Henry wants to finish this one by submission but Mayor is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Henry.
Mayor is wriggling around trying to escape.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Henry shoots in but no luck this time.
Mayor shoots for a takedown but Henry saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Henry tries for a takedown but Mayor sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Henry closes the distance and clinches up with Mayor, looking for a takedown. Henry pushes Mayor against the cage but Mayor circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Henry. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Mayor darts in looking for a takedown but Henry gets double underhooks and turns Mayor into the cage.
Henry is looking to clinch.
Mayor fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Henry swinging wildly here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mayor moves into range and clinches up with Henry.
Henry with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.

Mayor pulls guard successfully.
Mayor wants to improve his position but instead Henry has moved into half guard.
Henry moves into side control, avoiding the strikes from Mayor.
Henry is looking to take a break and control but Mayor is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Henry decides to stand back up. Henry steps back and let's Mayor get back to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Mayor dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Mayor closes the distance and pushes Henry back into the cage.
Henry prevents a takedown attempt there.

Mayor drags the fight down to the ground.
Mayor pulls Henry in close to prevent any damage.
Henry has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Mayor looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

John Henry overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Henry passes Mayor's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Mayor tries to roll over but Henry keeps him under control.

Henry gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
Mayor leaves Henry with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Mayor moves into the clinch.
Mayor tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mayor displaying some good clinch control by pressing Henry up against the cage.
Mayor is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Henry is defending well for now.
Henry tries to circle away but Mayor has him pinned against the cage.
Mayor wants a takedown.
Henry misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Mayor.
Henry tries to pull guard but Mayor won't allow it.

Mayor successfully pulls guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Mayor is looking to stand back up but Henry counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Mayor.
Henry thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Maymo Mayor showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Henry takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Mayor stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Mayor wants it to stay on the feet.
Henry shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Mayor counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Mayor.
Mayor managing to block the knees to the body from Henry.

Mayor breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Mayor forces Henry back against the cage and clinches.

Mayor lands a takedown into guard.

Henry manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Henry wants to get back to striking at distance but Mayor won't allow it.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Mayor escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Henry leaves Mayor with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Mayor keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Mayor shapes to counter with a head kick.

Mayor fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Henry to the ground. Mayor is now in Henry's guard.

Henry has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Mayor has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

Mayor pulls guard effortlessly.

Mayor working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Henry has passed into half guard!

Mayor wants to improve his position but Henry is controlling well.
Mayor is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Mayor is doing well to control the position and prevent Henry from advancing to side control.
Henry throwing shots but Mayor is blocking nicely.

Mayor is trying to stand.
Mayor is looking to improve his position.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Mayor goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Mayor fails with the takedown.
Mayor leaves Henry with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Henry throws a right and a left that both miss.
Mayor shoots in for a takedown but Henry shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
John Henry is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Henry gets cracked there but stands up to it.

Nice sprawl there from Henry as Mayor shoots in.
Mayor fails with the takedown.
Henry finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Mayor with the counter takedown but Henry avoids it easily.

Mayor avoids the head kick by Henry.

Mayor rushes Henry and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Mayor pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to John Henry.
I think Henry has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
