PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ralph Long (ranked 2000 p4p, 1006 weight class) and Lee Van Cleefe (ranked 214 p4p, 123 weight class). Van Cleefe has chosen Classics - The Master (1984) TV series as his entrance music. Ralph Long had a look across the cage there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 17 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ralph Long!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 23 - 27 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Lee Van Cleefe!
The judges for this bout are Darius Henderson, John Mangel and Damien Edna.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Some wild striking there from Van Cleefe.
Long lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Van Cleefe circles away quickly and effectively.

Long clinches with his opponent.
Van Cleefe digs a right hand underneath Long's ribcage. Long let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Long avoids the elbow strike from Van Cleefe, against the cage.
Van Cleefe avoiding damage as Long throws knees to the body.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Van Cleefe has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.

Long escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

and Van Cleefe counters with a takedown into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Van Cleefe content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Van Cleefe is looking to take a break and control but Long is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Van Cleefe throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Long wants to get back to his feet.

You can see the frustration on Long's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Long is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Van Cleefe has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Van Cleefe is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Long is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Van Cleefe is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Long knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Van Cleefe is just content to waste time from the top position. Long takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Long looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
Van Cleefe stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Long swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Long wants to sweep but no luck.

Van Cleefe drops back, looking for a kneebar! Long looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Long looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Long!

Van Cleefe wants to control but Long postures up.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Lee Van Cleefe dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Van Cleefe throws a series of strikes that have Long backpedaling.

Long clinches up against the cage.
Long avoids a wild elbow strike from Van Cleefe.
Long scores with a hook to the body.
Long digs a right hand underneath Van Cleefe's ribcage. Van Cleefe let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Van Cleefe throws a head punch that misses.
With the two fighters working up against the cage, Van Cleefe just misses with a elbow thrown towards Long's brow.

Long breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Crunch! Long slams his shin into Van Cleefe's torso.

Long has managed to clinch.
Long blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Long misses with a shot to the kidneys.

Van Cleefe walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.

It looks like Lee Van Cleefe has been cut.
Van Cleefe is breathing heavily.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Long misses with a wild combination.
Van Cleefe ducks down and throws a hook to the body.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Long throws a sloppy head kick

and Van Cleefe counters with a nice double leg into side control. Long won't be happy with that.

Van Cleefe tries for a kimura but Long is defending well.
Long is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Long tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Van Cleefe wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Long is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

Van Cleefe tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Van Cleefe has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Long is trying to control Van Cleefe's posture but Van Cleefe avoids it.

Long tries to bench press Van Cleefe off him but Van Cleefe keeps the position.
The strikes coming from Van Cleefe are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Van Cleefe wants to lay and pray for a moment but Long keeps working.
Van Cleefe lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Van Cleefe looking to control but instead Long has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.
Van Cleefe throwing shots but Long is blocking nicely.

Van Cleefe wants to control from the top but Long keeps moving.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Van Cleefe avoids the head kick by Long.

Long tries to sprawl but Van Cleefe drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Van Cleefe passes the guard and advances to mount!

Van Cleefe goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Long is on top in guard.
Van Cleefe is looking to sweep but instead, Long has passed into half guard.
Van Cleefe blocking the ground and pound attempt from Long.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Ralph Long will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Lee Van Cleefe's cut.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


Long shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Van Cleefe's guard.

Long stands up over his opponent, looking to dive in with a big punch. Here he comes, superman style! Oh, the punch misses and Van Cleefe has got him in a triangle choke for good measure! Oh no! Long manages to get his head free but now Van Cleefe has transitioned to an armbar! Long grimaces and is forced to tap! Beautiful Jiu Jitsu from Van Cleefe! I'd be surprised if that didn't end up as submission of the night!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:36 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Lee Van Cleefe!
