PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ryan Noel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Igor Sousa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Ryan Noel has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ryan Noel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Igor Sousa!
The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Matheus Silva and Edson Gomes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Noel fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Noel tries to close the distance and clinch up but Sousa swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Ryan Noel seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Noel shoots in looking for a takedown. Sousa tries to sprawl out of it but Noel keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Sousa manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ryan Noel. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Noel changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Sousa looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Noel throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Noel is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Sousa pushes Noel away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Noel gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Sousa parries the strikes from Noel easily there. Noel is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Sousa to escape.
Noel throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Noel has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Sousa gets a clinch.
A looping hook to the body misses from Noel. Sousa does a little dance to reset his feet.

Sousa scores with a takedown into Noel's guard.

Noel is trying to control the position but Sousa postures up.

Noel looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Sousa slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Sousa drops back looking for a leg! Noel is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Noel manages to kick Sousa off! Sousa jumps back into Noel's guard.

Noel working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sousa doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sousa manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Noel has his hands on Sousa's head, controlling the position.

Noel is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Sousa won't allow Noel to sweep him here.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Igor Sousa will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Noel shoots and misses

and Sousa counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Noel!
Noel tries to reverse the position but Sousa maintains control.
Sousa trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Noel is looking to improve his position but Sousa isn't that keen on the idea.
Noel is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Noel bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Sousa escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Noel gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Sousa is breathing heavily.
Noel won't allow Sousa to get back to his feet.
Noel stands and throws Sousa's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Noel trying to control the action but Sousa is working from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Noel throwing shots but missing, from side control.
Noel controls the position from side control.
Noel trying to control the position but Sousa is working away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Noel wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Sousa, who protects the arm well.

Noel is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Sousa has escaped the position, nice work there.
Noel trying to control the action but Sousa is working from the bottom.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Noel tries for a kimura but Sousa is defending well.
Noel working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Noel tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Ryan Noel will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Noel misses with a takedown attempt

so Sousa counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Sousa slips nicely into half guard.
Noel is looking to control Sousa's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Noel avoid being mounted?
Noel is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Sousa's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Sousa's back!
Noel doesn't have the hooks in and Sousa manages to turn into his guard.
Sousa postures up.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Noel is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Noel lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Sousa!
Noel wants to control the pace but Sousa is squirming around nicely.

Igor Sousa has got the better of the ground game so far.
Noel thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
