PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Corwin Anstey (ranked 1717 p4p, 4850 weight class) and Manuel Rios (ranked 226 p4p, 487 weight class). Manuel Rios will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 19 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Corwin Anstey!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Manuel Rios!
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Steve Smith and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Anstey shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Rios sprawls well. Rios wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Anstey gets slowly back to his feet.
Anstey takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Anstey shoots for a double leg takedown but Rios sprawls well. He's pushed Anstey's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Anstey shoots in for a takedown but Rios shows good takedown defense.
Rios let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Corwin Anstey. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rios throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Anstey attempts a counter takedown but Rios avoids it well and moves away.

Rios connects with a good right hand that stumbles Anstey. Anstey circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Anstey gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Rios.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Anstey.
Anstey fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Anstey dives in and scores a takedown into Rios's guard.
Anstey working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Anstey is stalling in the full guard.

Anstey has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Anstey wants to pass the guard but Rios is keeping the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Anstey's corner is telling him to maintain position.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Anstey's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Anstey is defended easily by Rios.
Rios appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.
Rios stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Anstey misses with a wild combination.

Rios misses the shot to the body.
Rios throws a right and a left that both miss.
Anstey looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
Anstey shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Rios pinned against the cage. Rios gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Anstey closes the distance and clinches up with Rios, looking for a takedown. Anstey pushes Rios against the cage but Rios circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
A nice side step and Rios releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Anstey takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Anstey doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Rios counters with a nice uppercut.
Rios lands a head shot.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!

Rios wants to stand but Anstey is controlling the position.
Anstey has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Rios throws a sloppy head kick and Anstey moves out of range easily.
Anstey attempts a counter takedown but Rios avoids it well and moves away.
Rios throws a lazy right hand but Anstey sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Anstey shoots in but no luck this time.
Anstey throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Rios's waist but Rios gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Anstey off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Corwin Anstey. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Anstey tries to score a power double leg takedown but Rios sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Anstey somewhat.
Rios has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Rios scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Rios leaves Anstey with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Rios throws a series of punches but Anstey moves out of range.
Anstey shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Rios counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Rios misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Anstey.
Anstey throws a shot from downtown. Rios moves away and avoids it.
Rios scores with the left hand. Anstey knows he should have avoided that one.

Anstey is rocked!
Anstey looks up at the clock. Bad move! Rios lands a right hand from hell, dropping Anstey. Rios pounces and finishes the fight with a flurry of punches and elbows.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Manuel Rios!
Manuel Rios decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
