PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Davis Gill (ranked 6058 p4p, 23430 weight class) and Martins Verdins (ranked 233 p4p, 256 weight class). Gill comes to the cage accompanied by White Room. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Davis Gill!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 16 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Martins Verdins!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Tarja Halkonen and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gill closes the distance and clinches.
Verdins fails to pull guard.
Gill tries to score a body lock takedown but Verdins shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Gill breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Gill has closed the distance and engaged Verdins in a clinch.
Gill is pressed up against the cage. Verdins has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Gill down to the mat. Gill avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Verdins tries to sprawl but Gill drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Verdins has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Gill is on him like a limpet, forcing Verdins back against the cage.

Gill's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Davis Gill seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Gill lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.

It looks like Martins Verdins has been cut.
Gill throws the kick towards the body but Verdins avoids it.
Verdins is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.

Verdins drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Verdins tries for a kimura but Gill is defending well.
Gill tries to bench press Verdins off him but Verdins keeps the position.

Verdins trying to control the position but Gill is working away.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gill can't do much from the bottom here.
Verdins wants to control but Gill is keeping him busy.

Verdins is looking to take a break and control but Gill is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Verdins should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Gill is trying to control Verdins's posture but Verdins avoids it.
Gill is looking for a sweep.
Gill is not content to let Verdins control the position.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Gill looks to land a combination. Verdins sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Gill shoots in looking for a takedown. Verdins tries to sprawl out of it but Gill keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Verdins manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Gill closes the distance and clinches.

Gill looks to land a body kick but Verdins moved away.
Gill throws a nice looking combination but Verdins bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Gill tries to bum rush Verdins with a series of wild strikes but Verdins uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Gill stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Gill wants it to stay on the feet.
Davis Gill has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Martins Verdins.

Gill definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.

Verdins shoots in and drives through. Gill sprawls well.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Verdins dodges the punch combination from Gill.
Verdins slaps away a takedown attempt from Gill, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Gill fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Verdins has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Gill closes this distance looking for a takedown but Verdins circles away.
Gill throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Verdins's waist but Verdins gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gill off to one side.
Gill is breathing heavily.
Verdins tries to close the distance and clinch up but Gill swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Gill dives in and scores a takedown into Verdins's guard.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The cut man is working on Martins Verdins's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Verdins misses with a jab, cross combination.

Gill closes the distance and clinches.
Verdins tries to pull guard but Gill won't allow it.

Gill pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
The fight stays on the outside here - Gill looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Gill enables Verdins to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Gill manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Gill manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Davis Gill is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Gill looks to land a combination but Verdins avoids it well.
Verdins has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Gill is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Verdins dives into side control.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Gill is trying to buck Verdins off.
Gill tries to buck Verdins off but Verdins is having none of it.
Martins Verdins has got the better of the ground game so far.

Verdins working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Gill manages to work his way to half guard, despite Verdins's best efforts.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Gill lands with a thumping leg kick.

Verdins closes this distance looking for a takedown but Gill circles away.
Gill went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.

Gill closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Verdins tries to improve position but can't.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Gill fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
A slapping leg kick lands for Verdins.
Gill lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.

Gill gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Verdins trying to control but Gill is working from the bottom.
Verdins stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gill swivels though and keeps the full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Gill on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Gill tries to get out of the position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Gill wants to get back to his feet.
Verdins wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gill keeps working.
You can see the frustration on Gill's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Verdins wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Gill, who protects the arm well.

Gill looks to move to half guard but instead Verdins has passed into mount! Damn!

Verdins scores with a couple of good head shots there.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Verdins swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Gill is now in Verdins's guard. A big mistake from Verdins there, giving up the dominant position!
Martins Verdins has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Davis Gill is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Gill slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

And that's the end of the fight!
Martins Verdins comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Gill has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
