PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Patrick Matthew (ranked 1396 p4p, 5935 weight class) and Bjj Spar (ranked 197 p4p, 528 weight class). Bjj Spar told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Patrick Matthew!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Bjj Spar !
The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, Jonathan Paton and Lou da Vinci.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Spar keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Matthew lands a slapping body shot.
Spar throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Matthew's waist but Matthew gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Spar off to one side.

Spar manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Matthew on his heels. He'll look to pass Matthew's guard now, I'm sure.

Spar has his foot on Matthew's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Matthew works his way back into a safe position though.
Spar is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Matthew's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Spar looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Matthew is fending him off so far but Spar persists. Nope, Matthew circles away and we're back to standing.

Spar throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Matthew tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Spar is in Matthew's guard.

Matthew has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Spar off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Spar seems to have recovered his senses.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

With the fighters clinched against the cage, Matthew creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.

My spies in Steel Penn Training Den inform me that Spar has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Matthew has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Spar is working away from the top position though.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Matthew, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
