PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Dean Stomp (ranked 2083 p4p, 2138 weight class) and Lyman Hicks (ranked 179 p4p, 187 weight class). Lyman Hicks told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Dean Stomp!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Lyman Hicks!
The judges for this bout are Dirk Anderson, Winston Alpacca and Sandra Marshall.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Stomp darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Stomp is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Stomp is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Hicks has managed to free his arm - good work.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Stomp is keen to just control but Hicks is a slippery customer.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

We've been hearing good reports from Stomp's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Stomp is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Hicks has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Hicks!

Stomp dives in and scores a takedown into Hicks's guard.

Hicks has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Stomp is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
Hicks misses with a short punch on the inside.

Hicks pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Stomp takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
Hicks's corner calls for a 1-2. Hicks obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
A telegraphed right hand from Hicks misses the target.
Hicks just misses with a punch to the body.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Stomp dodges the punch combination from Hicks.
Stomp bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

Stomp drives through with a takedown into guard.

Hicks pushes Stomp off and scrambles back to his feet.
Stomp throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Hicks's waist but Hicks gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Stomp off to one side.
Hicks scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.

Hicks gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Stomp to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Hicks controls Stomp momentarily but Stomp frees himself.

Hicks bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Stomp's guard.


Stomp escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Hicks gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Hicks has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.
You can see the frustration on Hicks's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
