PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ulysses Corbin (ranked 1737 p4p, 1969 weight class) and Phillip Coles (ranked 263 p4p, 299 weight class). Phillip Coles will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ulysses Corbin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Phillip Coles!
The judges for this bout are Elvis Blanc, Ian Loll and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Coles misses with a hook. Corbin ducked under it nicely.
Coles on the wrong end of a nice jab.
A slow jab from Corbin misses its intended target.
Coles fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Corbin manages to avoid it.
Corbin throws out a loose jab but Coles uses good head movement to avoid it.
Corbin ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Coles moves away.
Corbin looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Coles takes a swing at Corbin's ribcage but misses.
Coles cracks Corbin with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Corbin slips a jab and a cross from Coles.
Corbin uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Coles.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Coles throws a head punch that misses.
Corbin just leaning against Coles, taking a breather.
Corbin works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.
Coles fails to land with a short punch on the inside.

Coles lands with a right to the head.
Still in the clinch, Corbin scores with a nice short uppercut.
Corbin tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.

Corbin breaks the clinch.
Corbin slips a straight right by Coles.
Corbin thows a left - swing and a miss!
Coles takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Coles misses with an uppercut. Corbin saw that one coming.
Corbin displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Coles throws out the jab.
Corbin is looking to counter the offense by Coles and move into the clinch.
Coles looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Coles bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Corbin's head.
Corbin's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Coles connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Corbin scrambles back to his feet.
Coles steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Corbin.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Coles throws a jab when Corbin was well out of range.
Corbin with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Coles to score with a decent uppercut.
Coles throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Corbin seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Coles looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Coles jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Corbin connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.

Coles lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Coles missing with a left hand there. Corbin was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Coles scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Corbin gets cracked there but stands up to it.

Corbin has closed the distance and engaged Coles in a clinch.

Corbin is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Coles.
Corbin needs to keep his hands up - Coles had a free shot at his head there.

Coles throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Corbin sees it coming and avoids it easily.

Coles throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Corbin stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

A looping hook to the body misses from Corbin. Coles does a little dance to reset his feet.
Phillip Coles seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Coles throws a right and a left that Corbin avoids nicely.
Coles scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Corbin doesn't seem bothered though.
Coles bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Coles misses with a straight right.
Coles has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Coles ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Corbin moves away.
Coles looks to land a left hand but Corbin moved out of range nicely.
Coles throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Coles throws a body shot but no joy.
Coles throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Corbin appears to be looking for a counter punch to the body.

Coles has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Corbin is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.

Coles lands a left hand that snaps the head of Corbin backwards.

Corbin tries to throw a body punch but Coles avoids it by throwing Corbin back against the cage.

Coles is trying to slow the pace down but that's a couple of times in a row that he's tried to get underhooks and Corbin has denied him.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

As Coles tries to get set, Corbin tries to push him back and clinch up but Coles manages to avoid the attempt.

Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Corbin, as that shot connected.
Coles lunges at Corbin with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Corbin's hand.

Corbin decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Corbin throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Corbin tries to pass the half guard into mount. Coles knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Coles wants to improve his position but Corbin is controlling well.
Corbin throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Coles to regain full guard.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Coles holds on and takes a little breather.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Coles wants to stand and escape but Corbin is having none of it.

Corbin is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.

Coles fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Coles loads up on a big right hand but Corbin slips the punch.
Coles smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Phillip Coles is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Corbin shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Corbin drops back, looking for a kneebar! Coles looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Coles looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Coles!

Coles is looking to take a break and control but Corbin is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Phillip Coles is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Corbin manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Coles wants to get back to full guard.
Corbin is looking to take a break and control but Coles is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Coles is looking to control Corbin's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Coles avoid being mounted?
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Coles is trying to stand.
Coles is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Corbin's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Corbin's back!

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Phillip Coles.
I've got Coles winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
