PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Trond Asmundsen (ranked 2550 p4p, 1788 weight class) and Jason Mason (ranked 326 p4p, 238 weight class). Jason Mason told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 28 - 27 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Trond Asmundsen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jason Mason!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Robert Twigg and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mason displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Asmundsen throws out the jab.
Mason works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Asmundsen misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Mason.
Asmundsen throws a chopping leg kick but Mason manages to avoid taking any serious damage.

Mason gets a takedown into half guard.
Asmundsen tries to get to full guard but Mason has control of the leg.
Mason wants to control but Asmundsen is keeping him busy.
Asmundsen is trying to control but can't.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mason prevents Asmundsen from improving his position.

Mason is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Asmundsen is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Mason pulls his head out easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Asmundsen is trying to maintain the position but Mason is very close to passing his half guard.

Mason is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Asmundsen is trying to control but can't.
Mason moves nicely into side control.
You can see the frustration on Asmundsen's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Mason tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Asmundsen sneaks back into half guard.

Mason is looking for a kimura but Asmundsen is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Mason to get the leverage.

Mason is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Asmundsen sees it coming and defends easily.
Mason seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Asmundsen does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Mason is looking for a kimura but Asmundsen is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Mason to get the leverage.

Mason wants to work for an arm triangle but Asmundsen is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Asmundsen is looking for a sweep. Mason is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Mason stalling away here and it's allowed Asmundsen to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Asmundsen throws an overhand right that lands on Mason's shoulder, as Mason tries to avoid the shot.
Mason looks to throw the jab but Asmundsen is out of range.

It looks like Jason Mason has been cut.
Mason takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Mason ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Asmundsen moves away.

Mason shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Asmundsen but Asmundsen pushes him off and we're back to square one.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Asmundsen has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Mason finds it's way round the side to connect with Asmundsen's head.

Asmundsen checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.

Mason throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

That was a close second round but I would say that Trond Asmundsen will probably get the nod.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Well Mason has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
