PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Wang Dong (ranked 912 p4p, 783 weight class) and Reico Huust (ranked 86 p4p, 73 weight class). Reico Huust will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Wang Dong!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Reico Huust!
The judges for this bout are Steve Montenegro, Columbo Gatti and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Dong wants to land a leg kick but Huust is out of range.

Dong darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Dong tries to pass to full mount but Huust defends it.
Dong not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Dong is trying to control. Huust wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Dong looks to land a strike but Huust avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Dong engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Huust preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Dong trying to control the position from guard on top but Huust is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Dong might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Dong throws a strike but Huust rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Huust is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Dong wants to sweep here but Huust controlling him for the moment.

Dong is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Huust is aware though and is defending well.

Huust avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Dong seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.

Dong looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Dong is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.


Dong is working for a kimura but Huust is defending it quite comfortably.
Dong is looking to stall here but Huust recovers full guard.
Huust looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

Huust is trying to control the position but Dong postures up.
Dong throws an elbow that misses. Huust uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Dong's guard. Nice move by Huust!

Huust slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Dong has his foot on Huust's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Huust works his way back into a safe position though.
Dong is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Huust is positioning himself well to prevent Dong advancing to mount.
Dong throwing shots but Huust is blocking nicely.

Dong is trying to work for a kimura but Huust is defending well.
Huust wants to control but Dong is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Huust has hold of Dong's hands but Dong slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Back to the action!

Huust digs a good hook to Dong's body.
Huust's coach down at Hellfire Academy was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Huust's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Huust throws a leg kick which misses Dong's front leg but catches the back leg as Dong tries to avoid it.
Huust uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
Dong avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Dong closes the distance and clinches up with Huust, looking for a takedown. Dong pushes Huust against the cage but Huust circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Dong digs a good body shot into Huust's ribs.
Reico Huust is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Huust throws a leg kick but Dong sees it coming and moves out of range.
Huust looks to land a combination but Dong avoids it well.
Huust leaves Dong with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Huust sizes up Dong with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Dong shoots in looking for a takedown but Huust manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Dong's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Huust throws out a counter right but Dong avoids it with no problem.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Wang Dong. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Dong throws a front kick aimed at Huust's knee but Huust avoids it well.
Dong misses with a hook.
Huust was about to counter that last move with a leg kick but changes his mind.
Dong shoots in but no luck this time.
Huust throws a quick inside leg kick.

Dong tries to land a leg kick but Huust saw it coming and moves away.

Huust not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Dong is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Dong wants to pass the guard but Huust is keeping the position.

Dong has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Dong preventing the sweep.
Wang Dong overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Dong throws a big right hand that misses.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Huust tries to close the distance and clinch up but Dong swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Dong tried to counter with a leg kick but Huust avoided it.
Huust throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Reico Huust seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A swing and a miss from Dong.
Huust pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Huust thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Dong if he has to take too many more of those.
Huust lands a really nice looking cross but Dong seems unphased.

Dong closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Huust to the mat! Huust manages to get full guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Dong working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Dong trying to control but Huust is working from the bottom.
Huust wants to improve his position but instead Dong has moved into half guard.
Dong slips a nice elbow through Huust's hands, connecting with Huust's forehead.
Dong is just content to waste time from the top position. Huust takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Dong passes into half guard.

Dong is working for a kimura but Huust is defending it quite comfortably.

Dong is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Dong is controlling the pace.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Wang Dong will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Huust ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Dong moves away.
Huust tests Dong's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Dong shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Huust sprawls well. Huust wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Dong gets slowly back to his feet.
Dong moves out of range of the body kick.
Dong takes a body punch but keeps moving.
A decent looking cross lands there for Huust.
A nice leg kick from Huust, right into the meat of the thigh.
Huust is looking to slow Dong down with leg kicks.
Huust connects with a solid leg kick.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Dong fails with a takedown attempt.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Dong.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Wang Dong. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Huust throws the left hand but Dong avoids the punch easily.

Dong takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Huust checks the leg kick nicely there.
Huust scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Huust dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
The fighters circle momentarily. Huust darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Huust lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Huust swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Dong fires out a quick counter leg kick but Huust just manages to avoid it.
Dong takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Huust keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Reico Huust seems to be getting the better of the standup.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Dong shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Huust as he avoids it easily.
Huust misses with a two punch combination.
Dong wants to land a leg kick but Huust is out of range.
Huust fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Dong.
Huust takes a swing at Dong's ribcage but misses.
Dong is looking to counter with a shot to the body.

Dong looks to land a right hand but Huust moved out of range.
Huust throws a right hand that Dong ducks under and follows up with a left that Dong also avoids with ease.
Huust throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
Dong takes a shot to the body in his stride.

Dong gets the takedown into side control.
Dong throws a strike aimed at the side of Huust's head but Huust avoids it well.
Dong cracks Huust with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Huust is not content to let Dong control the position.

Dong wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Huust, who protects the arm well.

Dong tries to advance to mount but can't.
Dong throws an elbow but Huust slips to the side and avoids it well.

Dong is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Huust is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Dong looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The ground and pound from Dong seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Huust takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
A lull in the action here.
Dong trying to control the position but Huust is working away.

And that's the end of the fight!
Reico Huust comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Dong has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
