PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Shinnosuke Nakagawa (ranked 71 p4p, 174 weight class) and James Spencer (ranked 11 p4p, 23 weight class). Nakagawa comes to the cage accompanied by Koto - CloZee. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 23 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Shinnosuke Nakagawa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, James Spencer!
The judges for this bout are Phil Schofield, Chris Edwards and Steven Brown.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sloppy strikes from Nakagawa. Those never looked like landing.
Spencer thinks about the counter body kick.
Nakagawa misses with a looping left.
Spencer lets loose with a powerful body kick. Nakagawa will feel that in the morning.

Nakagawa clinches with his opponent.
Nakagawa fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Spencer tries to work over Nakagawa's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

Spencer breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Spencer fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Nakagawa closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Nakagawa tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Nakagawa tries a body shot but Spencer blocks it.
Nakagawa wants a takedown.
An uppercut to the body lands inside from Nakagawa.
Spencer doesn't land with the attempted body shot.

Spencer goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Spencer creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.

Spencer breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Spencer uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Nakagawa.
Spencer follows through with a counter body kick but it doesn't land.
Spencer misses with an uppercut. Nakagawa saw that one coming.

Nakagawa shoots for a double leg takedown but Spencer sprawls well. He's pushed Nakagawa's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

We've been hearing reports that Nakagawa has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Nakagawa shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Spencer but Spencer pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Nakagawa looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.

It looks like Shinnosuke Nakagawa has been cut.
Nakagawa tries to clinch but Spencer moves out of range.
A nice side step and Spencer releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Spencer misses with an attempted mid kick.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.

Nakagawa fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
Nakagawa staying out of range there.
James Spencer seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Spencer lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Nakagawa has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Nakagawa and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.

Nakagawa is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Spencer to keep the fight standing.
Spencer is looking to control Nakagawa's arms but Nakagawa gets an underhook and turns him. Now Spencer has his back to the cage.

Nakagawa lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Nakagawa closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Spencer's guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nakagawa sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Spencer's guard.

Nakagawa is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Spencer is controlling Nakagawa's position as best he can from this difficult position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Spencer is looking to regain full guard. He's left an arm up in the air though and Nakagawa has latched onto it... Big trouble! Nakagawa pivots for an armbar - it's in tight and it Spencer is tapping in no time flat! Great counter grappling there from Nakagawa!
