PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Sabas Mendiola (ranked 1799 p4p, 2481 weight class) and Benjamin Walton (ranked 234 p4p, 320 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Sabas Mendiola!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Benjamin Walton!
The judges for this bout are Paul Aken, Saam Ante and Radbod Blank.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mendiola comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Mendiola throws an off balance right hand
and Walton counters with a head kick.
Mendiola fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Walton manages to avoid it.
A little jabbing left from Walton on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Sabas Mendiola seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Walton tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Walton stuffs the takedown attempt from Mendiola. Mendiola gets slowly back to his feet.
Walton throws a lazy uppercut
and Mendiola counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

Mendiola scores with a takedown into Walton's guard.

Walton kicks Mendiola off and gets to his feet.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Walton throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Mendiola stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

Nice defenses there by Mendiola.

Walton lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Mendiola jabs Walton right on the nose. Walton blinks but takes it well.
Mendiola misses with a looping right.
Mendiola moves out of range of the strikes.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Mendiola cracks Walton with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Walton lands with an overhand left.

It looks like Benjamin Walton has been cut.
Walton cracks Mendiola with a right hand to the side of the head.
Walton dips to his left and cracks Mendiola with an uppercut!

Mendiola wants to control for a moment but Walton uses the opportunity to move back to half guard.
Mendiola wants to control but Walton is keeping him busy.

Mendiola is pressing down on Walton's thigh, looking to free his foot. Walton is holding on for now.

Walton has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Mendiola is working away from the top position though.
Walton is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Mendiola scores with a couple of nice shots.
Walton gets full guard.
Mendiola landing some decent shots from guard.
Mendiola throws an elbow that misses. Walton uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Mendiola's guard. Nice move by Walton!

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Mendiola connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
Walton tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Mendiola was well out of range. Poor timing from Walton.
Walton uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Mendiola.
Mendiola ducks under a wild hook from Walton.
Mendiola takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
Walton uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Mendiola.
Walton steps in looking to counter with the mid kick but it doesn't connect.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mendiola just misses with a punch to the body.
Walton throws a push kick but Mendiola slaps the foot to one side.
Mendiola drops down looking for a counter takedown but Walton sprawls and moves away.

Walton displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Mendiola throws out the jab.
Walton is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Mendiola.
Mendiola looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Mendiola gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Mendiola takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

and Walton cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Mendiola feints and as Walton raises his hands in defense, Mendiola changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Walton uses the cage to get back to his feet.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Walton scores with a slapping inside leg kick.

Walton darts in and clinches Mendiola up against the cage.
Mendiola blocks a body shot from Walton.

Mendiola is trying to trip Walton. He has hold of a leg but Walton is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Mendiola persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Walton looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Walton holds on and takes a little breather.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Mendiola throws a big elbow that misses.
Walton is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Mendiola regains full guard. Nicely done.
Walton not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Benjamin Walton showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Walton tries to close the distance and clinch up but Mendiola swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Walton looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Mendiola doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Walton connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Mendiola walks into a straight right, dropping him to the canvas! Walton swarms him and finishes the fight with a hail of punches! What a brutal finish!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:32 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Benjamin Walton!
A very excited looking Benjamin Walton rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
