PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Dick Diaz (ranked 2315 p4p, 4280 weight class) and Phoenix Peterson (ranked 314 p4p, 496 weight class). Diaz kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Feiticeira. Peterson comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Red Nation kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Phoenix Peterson acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Phoenix Peterson!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Josh West and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Peterson throws a body kick that digs right into the meat.
Peterson throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Diaz on the side of the head.

Diaz stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Peterson.
Peterson lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Peterson misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Diaz swings for the body but Peterson moves out of range.
Peterson avoids a punch combination nicely.
Diaz with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Peterson to score with a decent uppercut.

Peterson is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! Diaz had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into mush.
Diaz throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Peterson lands with a nice body punch.
Peterson throws a jab when Diaz was well out of range.
Diaz uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Peterson.
We've been told by Diaz's head coaches at Outlier Martial Arts that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Peterson throws a front kick that sends Diaz stumbling back into the cage.

Phoenix Peterson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

It seemed like Peterson was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

As Diaz backs off Peterson throws a huge counter combo but Diaz manages to avoid it all.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Phoenix Peterson dominated that round.
That's time! Diaz's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Diaz has not gone for a single takedown so far in this fight, which seems like a very strange tactic when you consider that he has the superior wrestling and BJJ.

This entire fight has taken place on the feet so far and you wonder whether Diaz might be better served trying to take this one to the ground because he's losing the standup battle so far.

Peterson avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Oh Diaz is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Diaz walks straight into a right hand from Peterson - that's dropped him! Peterson jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save Diaz from any more punishment! Diaz complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:37 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Phoenix Peterson!
An out of breath Phoenix Peterson thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
In defeat, Dick Diaz stepped up to the mic, saying 'I'll Slap you harder next time!!!'.
