PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Nate Masvidal (ranked 1380 p4p, 1034 weight class) and James Rocksteady (ranked 171 p4p, 136 weight class). Rocksteady has chosen Red Right Hand as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 25 - 29 - 1, fighting out of London, Nate Masvidal!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, James Rocksteady!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Ben Watson and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Masvidal misses with a lunging right hand

and Rocksteady counters with a nice double leg into side control. Masvidal won't be happy with that.

Masvidal is trying to escape the position but Rocksteady is controlling the position.

Rocksteady lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Masvidal down.

Rocksteady swings around for an armbar but Masvidal sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Rocksteady's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Masvidal stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Rocksteady swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Masvidal drops back, looking for a kneebar! Rocksteady looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Rocksteady looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Rocksteady!

Rocksteady tries to score with some ground and pound. Masvidal controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Rocksteady is looking to take a break and control but Masvidal is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Rocksteady uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Masvidal.
Rocksteady misses with a hook. Masvidal ducked under it nicely.
Nate Masvidal seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Horrible takedown attempt by Masvidal or perhaps it was just good defense by Rocksteady, which made it look bad.

Masvidal shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.

Masvidal feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Rocksteadys jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Masvidal will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Masvidal has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Rocksteady is working away from the top position though.
Masvidal is looking for a sweep. Rocksteady is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Nate Masvidal has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

James Rocksteady comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Rocksteady has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
