PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Doran Connell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Marcus Schmidli (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Connell comes to the cage accompanied by Rob Kelly - Rockstar. Schmidli is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Ante Up from Busta Rhymes. Marcus Schmidli has the eye of the tiger tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Doran Connell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Marcus Schmidli!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, Richard Clark and Chris Edwards.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Schmidli scores with a takedown into Connell's guard.
Schmidli looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Connell is on top in guard.
Connell showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Schmidli is trying to control the position but Connell postures up.

Connell is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Schmidli escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Connell gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Connell wants to stand but Schmidli is controlling his posture from full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Connell content to stall in guard here.

Connell seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Schmidli for as long as he can get away with.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Connell pushes down on Schmidli's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Connell stalling.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Doran Connell just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Connell moves into the clinch successfully.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Connell landing some nice looking knees to the body.

Connell wants the takedown. Schmidli is fighting it off but Connell persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Schmidli's guard against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Connell's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Schmidli closes the distance but Connell moves to the side

and Connell counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Connell.

Connell manages to break the clinch.

Connell connects with a nasty looking knee right to Schmidli's face.
Schmidli tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Connell jumps into guard, dragging Schmidli to the mat.
Connell tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Connell seems keen to control Schmidli's posture.
Schmidli is breathing heavily.

Connell really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Connell pulls Schmidli in close to prevent any damage.
Schmidli throws and elbow that misses. Connell uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Schmidli's guard. Nice move by Connell!
Connell wants to control from the top but Schmidli keeps moving.
Connell wants to get up but he can't break Schmidli's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Connell landing with the ground and pound.
Connell trying to control the position from guard on top but Schmidli is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Connell throws a big right hand that misses.
Connell in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Connell controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Connell's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Connell loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Connell scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Connell slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Doran Connell dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!



Connell moves into the clinch.
Connell lands a damaging elbow.
Connell using the Thai clinch to land knees to the body.
Connell has Schmidli pressed against the cage.
Connell lands a nice elbow.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Connell jumps guard.
Schmidli takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Connell is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Connell controlling the pace.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Connell connects with a nice short shot to Schmidli's temple.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Connell tries to stand and escape but Schmidli is controlling the position.
Connell works his foot free and advances to mount.
Connell knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Schmidli on the ground.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Connell jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Schmidli manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Connell scores with a couple of short elbows.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Connell is working Schmidli over with some ground and pound from side control.
Schmidli prevents Connell from improving position.

Marcus Schmidli has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Connell tries to close the distance and clinch but Schmidli swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Connell rushes Schmidli and presses him up against the cage.

Doran Connell showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Connell has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
