Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Thiego Alves!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Leandro Gomes!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Leandro Rodrigues and Luis Engracia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gomes misses with a takedown attempt - Alves sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Alves with a poor takedown

and Gomes counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Gomes.
Alves is trying to maintain a safe position but Gomes gets an underhook and turns Alves into the cage.
Gomes scores with a nice hook to the head.

Alves pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

and Gomes counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Alves's guard now.

Gomes drops back, looking for a kneebar! Alves looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Alves looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Alves!

Gomes tries to hold on but Alves postures up.
Gomes tries to reverse the position but Alves maintains control.

Alves manages to capitalize on a mistake by Gomes to take his back!

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Alves is looking to stand up but Gomes won't let him.
Gomes is trying to control the position but Alves postures up.
Alves is fighting to break Gomes's control of his arms but Gomes is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

and Gomes counters with a nice double leg into side control. Alves won't be happy with that.

You can see the frustration on Alves's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gomes is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
I looks like Gomes might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Gomes is trying to get an arm triangle but Alves is defending well.
Gomes misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Gomes lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Alves down.

Gomes is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Alves has escaped the position, nice work there.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Alves being controlled for a moment.
Gomes is chipping away with strikes.
Gomes works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.

Gomes is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Alves has escaped the position, nice work there.

Gomes tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Gomes has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Leandro Gomes dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Alves fails with an attempt to clinch.
Gomes misses with a wild body shot.

Gomes changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Alves looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Alves stops Gomes from passing to mount.
Alves manages to work his way to half guard, despite Gomes's best efforts.

Gomes is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Alves defends it well.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Gomes wants to advance to full mount but Alves doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.

Alves pulls Gomes in close to his closed guard and prevents Gomes from doing any damage or advancing position.

Alves might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Alves closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Alves clinches but Gomes breaks the clinch
letting Gomes counter with a right hand.

and Gomes counters with a single leg into guard. Alves didn't expect that.
Gomes must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Gomes tries for a takedown but Alves sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Leandro Gomes showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Alves fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Gomes clinches with his opponent.
Alves avoiding damage as Gomes throws knees to the body.

Gomes breaks the clinch.

Gomes rushes Alves and presses him up against the cage.
Alves is trying to break free.
Gomes is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
Gomes works on Alves's body with a couple of short punches.
Alves using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Gomes has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Gomes blocks the elbow strike.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Alves takes a shot to the head.

Gomes manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Gomes throws his legs up looking for a submission but Alves uses it to pass to side control.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Gomes is trying to maintain the position but Alves is very close to passing his half guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Alves tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Gomes just stands there and leans against the cage.
Gomes manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Gomes keeps control of Alves as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Gomes gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Gomes wants to stand up but Alves has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Gomes is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Alves reverses the position - he's now on top in Gomes's guard.
