PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Seth Hughes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Poncherello (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Seth Hughes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Frank Poncherello!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Stewart Dunkirk and Tiny Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hughes misses with the combination.
Poncherello slips a jab from Hughes.
Hughes throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Poncherello sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Hughes circles away from the clinch attempt.
Hughes swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Hughes finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.

Hughes decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Poncherello gets full guard.
Poncherello bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Hughes's guard.
Poncherello stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hughes swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Hughes manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Poncherello manages to get himself to full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hughes wants to control from the top but Poncherello keeps moving.

Poncherello utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Hughes's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Poncherello wants to sweep here but Hughes controlling him for the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Poncherello keeping moving, preventing Hughes from controlling successfully.
Hughes postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Poncherello wants to hit a switch here but Hughes passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Poncherello there!
Hughes tries to control but Poncherello wriggling away.
Hughes will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Poncherello is in all sorts of trouble here.

Hughes goes for an armbar but Poncherello turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Poncherello.
Poncherello pushes down on Hughes's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Hughes is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Poncherello's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Poncherello's back!
Hughes has the hooks in. Poncherello is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
Poncherello is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Poncherello is on top in guard.

Hughes is trying to maintain the position but Poncherello is very close to passing his half guard.

That was a close round but I would say that Seth Hughes will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


No joy there for Hughes, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Poncherello blocks a leg kick.
Poncherello shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Hughes misses with a wild body shot.
The fighters circling - Hughes throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Poncherello takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Hughes throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Hughes scoring well with a low kick there.
Hughes tests Poncherello's chin there with a solid looking shot.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hughes throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Hughes.
Poncherello slips a jab and a cross from Hughes.

Hughes fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Poncherello manages to avoid it.
Poncherello keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Hughes.
Hughes throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Hughes will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Hughes shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Poncherello pinned against the cage. Poncherello gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Seth Hughes. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Hughes tried to score with a low kick but Poncherello checks it.

Hughes closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Poncherello lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Hughes!

Poncherello lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

Poncherello goes for an armbar but Hughes turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Hughes.
Hughes is looking to work some ground and pound but Poncherello has wrist control.

Hughes misses with a head shot. Poncherello uses the momentum to regain guard.

Poncherello is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Hughes can't keep his opponent in guard - Poncherello advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Frank Poncherello showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Hughes closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Poncherello to the mat! Poncherello manages to get full guard.

Poncherello uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Hughes.
Hughes lands a nice shot to the body.
Poncherello stuffs the takedown attempt from Hughes. Hughes gets slowly back to his feet.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Hughes not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Poncherello wants to pass the guard but Hughes is keeping the position.

Hughes tries to lock up and control but Poncherello gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

The referee warns Hughes that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.


Hughes is rocked!
Poncherello has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Hughes regains half guard.
Hughes is looking to get back to full guard here but Poncherello has managed to pass to side control instead.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Poncherello throws some shoulder strikes here and then postures up. Oh, he's gone for an armbar! Hughes has his hands clasped together but Poncherello breaks the hold and Hughes is forced to tap! This one is aaaaaaaaaaall over! That was lightning fast by Poncherello!
