PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Pierre Ragout Mendy (ranked 1820 p4p, 5228 weight class) and Yoji Anjo Anjo (ranked 243 p4p, 502 weight class). Yoji Anjo Anjo will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 36 - 31 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Pierre Ragout Mendy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 32 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Yoji Anjo Anjo!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Blasius, Paul Aken and Nard Betker.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mendy throws a body shot but no joy.
Mendy pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Anjo back to the cage. Mendy follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
Anjo keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Anjo scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Mendy doesn't seem bothered though.
Mendy throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Anjo scores with a takedown into Mendy's guard.

Mendy uses the cage to get back to his feet.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Jab, jab by Mendy - just one landing.
Pierre Ragout Mendy seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Anjo tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Anjo fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Anjo shoots in but Mendy avoids the takedown attempt easily.
We've been hearing reports that Mendy has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Mendy throws a hook but Anjo avoids it easily.

Mendy throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Anjo was covering up waiting for the punch and Mendy finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Anjo is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Mendy controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Mendy stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Anjo swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Anjo has his foot on Mendy's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Mendy works his way back into a safe position though.
Anjo controls Mendy momentarily but Mendy frees himself.
Anjo looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Mendy cracks Anjo with a solid left hand.
Anjo trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!

Mendy trying to control the position from guard on top but Anjo is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Mendy throws a big elbow that misses.
Mendy engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Anjo pulls Mendy in close to his closed guard and prevents Mendy from doing any damage or advancing position.

Anjo is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Mendy defends well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mendy trying to control but Anjo is working from the bottom.
Mendy is working Anjo over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Mendy looking to sit in guard and control but Anjo gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


Mendy manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.
Mendy wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Mendy has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Anjo regains guard immediately.

Anjo is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Anjo has his hands on Mendy's head, controlling the position.

Anjo is trying to keep Mendy in close.
Mendy postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Mendy makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Mendy is in close to Anjo's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Mendy is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Anjo keeping moving, preventing Mendy from controlling successfully.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Mendy throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Mendy trying to control but Anjo is working from the bottom.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!

Mendy is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Anjo.
Mendy misses with a jab to the body
and Anjo counters with a series of strikes. Mendy will be more careful next time no doubt.
Mendy misses with an uppercut. Anjo saw that one coming.

Anjo has taken the fight to the clinch.

Anjo drags the fight down to the ground.
Anjo keeping moving, preventing Mendy from controlling successfully.

Mendy got a little sloppy there for a moment and Anjo has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Mendy has managed to get both his arms back between Anjo's legs - danger averted.
Mendy has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Anjo is trying to control the position but Mendy postures up.
Mendy wants to control from the top but Anjo keeps moving.
Anjo tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Mendy not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Mendy tries to free his leg and advance position but Anjo is retaining full guard.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Anjo can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Mendy controls the pace.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Anjo shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Mendy as he jumps to the side.
Pierre Ragout Mendy is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Mendy scores with a nice body kick.
A slow jab from Mendy misses its intended target.
Mendy throws a hook but Anjo avoids it easily.
Mendy misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
No luck for Anjo with that takedown attempt.

Mendy throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Anjo replies with a solid counter kick to the body but Mendy blocks it well.
Anjo shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Mendy but Mendy pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Pierre Ragout Mendy has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Yoji Anjo Anjo.
Mendy cracks Anjo with a good jab.
Mendy misses with a hook.
Anjo unleashes a big counter combination but Mendy bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
Mendy stuffs the takedown attempt from Anjo. Anjo gets slowly back to his feet.

Anjo tries to clinch but Mendy is having none of it.
A looping hook to the body misses from Mendy. Anjo does a little dance to reset his feet.
Anjo changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Mendy swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

Mendy shoots in and bounces Anjo off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Anjo wants to sweep but no luck.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mendy passes into half guard.
Anjo avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Mendy.
Anjo is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Mendy scores with a couple of nice shots.
Mendy passes into side control, despite Anjo's attempt to control the position.
Mendy trying to control the position but Anjo is working away.
Mendy looks up at the clock and then as Anjo takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Mendy smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Check out the look on Mendy's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Mendy lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Anjo down.

Anjo tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Anjo takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Mendy lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Anjo regains half guard there - taking advantage of Mendy's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.
Anjo is looking to improve his position.
Mendy moves into full mount! Anjo won't be happy about that!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Mendy lands a nice shot to the head.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

and Anjo counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
A jab lands there for Mendy.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Mendy.
Anjo feints the counter takedown.
Anjo tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Mendy half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Mendy lands with a hook. Anjo tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.

Mendy shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Anjo manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Mendy throws a strike but Anjo rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Anjo stands and steps away. Mendy gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Mendy is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Anjo can do to turn this around?
Anjo wants to clinch up but Mendy keeps it at a distance.
Mendy misses with a takedown attempt - Anjo sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Anjo dives in for a single leg takedown but Mendy sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Mendy dips to his left and cracks Anjo with an uppercut!
Anjo looks for the body kick but Mendy saw that one coming.
Mendy misses with a low kick as Anjo jumps back.

Mendy fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Anjo sprawls well initially but Mendy persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Anjo has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Mendy is working away from the top position though.
Anjo is trying to get back to full guard.
Anjo is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Mendy scores with a couple of nice shots.
Anjo regains full guard. Nicely done.
Anjo controls Mendy momentarily but Mendy frees himself.

Mendy is stalling in the full guard.
Anjo trying to keep a closed guard but Mendy is proving a slippery customer.

Anjo can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Mendy controls the pace.

Anjo has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Mendy off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Mendy thuds his right hand into Anjo's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

Anjo throws a head kick that misses.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Anjo.
Mendy looks to land a left hand but Anjo moved out of range nicely.
Mendy misses with a body shot.

Anjo rushes Mendy and presses him up against the cage.

Mendy has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Anjo is trying to keep an underhook but Mendy manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Mendy wants to work for an arm triangle but Anjo is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Anjo has hold of Mendy's hands but Mendy slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Mendy seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Anjo does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Mendy looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Mendy is keen to just control but Anjo is a slippery customer.
Mendy is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Mendy looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Anjo on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Anjo is trying to stand back up but Mendy is controlling him
Yoji Anjo Anjo has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Pierre Ragout Mendy is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Mendy, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
