PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Leonardinho Chai (ranked 2428 p4p, 2147 weight class) and Pedro Gomez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gomez has chosen Hotel California (Spanish Mix) as his entrance music. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Leonardinho Chai!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Pedro Gomez!
The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, Daniel Bishop and Paul Tew.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gomez fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Chai on the side of the head.
Chai doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Gomez counters with a nice uppercut.
Chai slips a jab and a cross from Gomez.
Chai is looking to counter with a shot to the body.
Chai rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Gomez counters with a stiff right hand.
Chai fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Gomez looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

We've been informed that Gomez has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result.
Chai shoots in for a takedown but Gomez shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Gomez throws a hook to the side of Chai's head but Chai sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Chai's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Gomez connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Chai scrambles back to his feet.

Chai rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Gomez moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Chai has hold of one of Gomez's legs. Gomez is fighting the takedown attempt but Chai gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gomez seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Gomez can do anything to dispel that myth.

Chai thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Chai is looking to take a break and control but Gomez is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Gomez lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Gomez misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Chai.

and Gomez counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Chai is lucky that one didn't land flush.

Gomez might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.

As Gomez tries to get set, Chai tries to push him back and clinch up but Gomez manages to avoid the attempt.

Chai feints and as Gomez raises his hands in defense, Chai changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Chai stands and throws Gomez's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Gomez really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Chai. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
