PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Bam Bam Joshy (ranked 1184 p4p, 798 weight class) and Frankie Mir (ranked 91 p4p, 63 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Bam Bam Joshy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Frankie Mir!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, James Glass and Donald Grub.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Joshy tries a head kick but it misses.

Mir shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Joshy lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.


Mir is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Joshy drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Mir manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Joshy has Mir in his guard.


Joshy is looking for a triangle but Mir pushes his legs off easily.
Mir trying to control the position from guard on top but Joshy is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Mir controlling from the top position.
Mir with a flurry of punches that miss.
Mir in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Joshy has his foot on Mir's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Mir works his way back into a safe position though.

Joshy is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Mir defends well.
Joshy keeping moving, preventing Mir from controlling successfully.
Mir connects with a couple of short punches.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Mir wants to pass the guard but Joshy is keeping the position.

Joshy has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Mir can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Joshy seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
Mir postures up and lands a big shot to Joshy's brow.
Joshy avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Mir pushing down on Joshy's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Mir lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Joshy keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Mir landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Mir looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Joshy with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Joshy actively working from the bottom here.

Mir takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Joshy won't allow Mir to pass to mount.
Still in half guard, Mir seems content to control.
Mir is trying to control. Joshy wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Joshy might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Mir working over Joshy with some ground and pound. Joshy looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.

Mir is working for a kimura but Joshy is defending it quite comfortably.
Mir throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Joshy to regain full guard.
Mir wants to control from the top but Joshy keeps moving.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mir postures up and lands a big shot to Joshy's brow.
Mir has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Mir distracts Joshy with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Joshy is defending against the submission attempts here by Mir.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Frankie Mir dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Joshy keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Joshy scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Mir doesn't seem bothered though.
Joshy is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Mir.
Mir closes the distance and clinches up with Joshy, looking for a takedown. Mir pushes Joshy against the cage but Joshy circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Mir shoots in and gets a takedown into Joshy's guard.

Joshy escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mir gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Joshy had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Mir defends it easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mir postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Mir has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Joshy is looking for a triangle but Mir pushes his legs off easily.
Mir looking to sit in guard and control but Joshy gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


Mir working for a triangle but Joshy defends it easily.
Joshy won't allow Mir to sweep him here.
Mir throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Mir is looking for a triangle here but Joshy uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Frankie Mir has got the better of the ground game so far.
Mir is trying to control Joshy's posture but Joshy avoids it.
Mir sneaks back into half guard.
Mir wants to control but Joshy is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Mir is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Joshy is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Mir is just riding it out for now. Joshy eventually gives up the hold.

Mir looking for subs from the bottom but Joshy mounts him!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mir is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Joshy jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Mir manages to avoid the submission attempt.

Joshy wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Mir, who protects the arm well.

Mir is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Joshy's leg. Oh but that's left an opportunity for Joshy! He's got an arm triangle... it looks tight! He's rotating and Mir has tapped! This one is allllll over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:57 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Bam Bam Joshy!
