PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between thaigo alves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and The Chi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). alves comes to the cage accompanied by sandstorm. Chi comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Advance On kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! The Chi will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, thaigo alves!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Luis Engracia and Paulo Santos.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Chi throws a low kick but alves avoids it.

alves forces Chi back against the cage and clinches.
Chi is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

alves breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
alves changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Chi tries to avoid it but alves manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Chi to the ground. Chi escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

alves drives through and clinches with Chi against the cage.

alves escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from alves.
alves checks a leg kick.
Chi will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Chi connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.

It looks like thaigo alves has been cut.
alves looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Chi manages to escape and get back to his feet!
Chi throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent alves stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Chi looks to land a combination but alves avoids it well.
Chi looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? alves is fending him off so far but Chi persists. Nope, alves circles away and we're back to standing.
Chi tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but alves swivels and escapes.

Chi throws a nice inside leg kick.

alves is working for takedown but Chi is calmly controlling the position for now.
Chi is trying to drag alves to the mat but alves just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
alves stalling in the clinch but Chi improves position.

The cut man is working on thaigo alves's cut.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Chi feints and then cracks alves's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow alves down.

alves tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Chi smiles and moves away.

Chi ducks down and throws a hook to the body but alves moves away.

Chi throws a wild body kick that alves sees coming a mile off.

alves has managed to clinch.
alves jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Chi walks away with a smile on his face. alves gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Chi misses with a double jab.
Chi shoots in but no luck this time.
thaigo alves has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of The Chi.
Chi looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.

alves has closed the distance and engaged Chi in a clinch.
Chi has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. alves is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
alves has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Chi avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Chi goes for a takedown attempt but alves pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

alves has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Chi uses from the top position.
Chi stays in close to alves's body and controls the position.
alves looking to hit a scissor sweep but Chi is one step ahead there.
Chi slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Chi wants to get up but he can't break alves's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
alves is trying to control the position from the bottom.
alves looking to hit a scissor sweep but Chi is one step ahead there.
alves wants to get back to his feet but Chi passes into half guard.
Chi trying to control from half guard but alves is working away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The Chi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

alves is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight.
Chi shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

alves working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
alves stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Chi swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

alves throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Chi works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

A nice inside leg kick there by alves. That's going to slow Chi down.
alves on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Chi. Chi obviously looking to wear him down.

The Chi seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The fight stays on the outside here - Chi looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Excellent takedown into side control there by alves.
Chi is not content to let alves control the position.
alves connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Chi some visible discomfort.
Chi dodges the ground and pound from alves.
thaigo alves has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Chi can't do much from the bottom here.
Chi regains half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to thaigo alves.
I think Chi has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
