PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Alex Perez (ranked 25256 p4p, 3727 weight class) and Michal Materla (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Perez has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Alex Perez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Michal Materla!
The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Paulo Santos and Daniel Cesar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Perez gets tackled into the cage by Materla. Materla maintains the clinch.
Perez tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Materla just stands there and leans against the cage.
Perez is breathing heavily.
Materla tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Perez could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Materla successfully pulls guard.

Perez avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Materla pulls Perez in close to his closed guard and prevents Perez from doing any damage or advancing position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Materla working for a triangle but Perez defends it easily.
Materla wants to sweep here but Perez controlling him for the moment.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Materla is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Materla escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Perez gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Materla had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Perez defends it easily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Materla is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Materla keeps the fight on the outside.
Materla lands a nice looking kick to the body. Perez takes a step back to recover.
Materla thuds his shin into the meat of Perez's side.

Materla drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Perez has his foot on Materla's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Materla works his way back into a safe position though.
Materla controls from within his opponent's guard.

Perez has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Materla can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Materla avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Materla gets to his feet - Perez follows without any prompting.
Materla scores with a one two! Perez had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

Materla feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Perez looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

Perez has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Materla can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Materla passes Perez's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Materla thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Materla wants to lay and pray for a moment but Perez keeps working.
Materla trying to pass the guard but Perez defending well.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Michal Materla dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Materla closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Perez did well to prevent Materla getting side control.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Materla connects with a nice short shot to Perez's temple.
Materla landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Materla wants to work for an arm triangle but Perez is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Materla thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Perez's head.
Perez is trying to get back to full guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Materla seems to be looking for submissions.
Michal Materla has got the better of the ground game so far.

Perez tries to get to full guard but Materla has control of the leg.

Materla slips a nice elbow through Perez's hands, connecting with Perez's forehead.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Perez is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Materla is controlling the pace.

Materla is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Perez sees it coming and defends easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Perez wants to improve his position but Materla is controlling well.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Materla instigates a clinch.

Materla tries to stall but Perez uses the opportunity to gain a better position.

Materla pulls guard.
Materla doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Perez trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Materla looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Perez wants to control from the top but Materla keeps moving.

Perez preventing the sweep.
Perez trying to control the position from guard on top but Materla is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Materla is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Materla is looking to clinch but Perez is avoiding it.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
A head kick from Materla lands but Perez takes it in his stride.
Materla tries to close the distance and clinch but Perez swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Perez tries to clinch but Materla is having none of it.
Perez wants to clinch.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Michal Materla showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Materla closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Perez quickly recovers to half guard.
Perez is looking to improve his position.
Materla seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Perez is not content to let Materla control the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Still in half guard, Materla seems content to control.

Materla stands up and beckons Perez to join him on the feet.

Materla tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Perez paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Perez looks to clinch
and Materla counters with a big head kick but Perez shrugs it off.
Perez tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Materla counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Materla has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Materla rushes Perez and presses him up against the cage.

Materla pulls guard effortlessly.
Materla tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Perez trying to control but Materla is working from the bottom.
Perez trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Perez drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Perez jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Perez is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Materla controls Perez momentarily but Perez frees himself.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Materla manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
Materla stalling the fight.
Materla tries for a takedown. No joy.
Perez letting Materla take a breather here.
Materla missing with knees to the body.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Perez is trying to drag Materla to the mat but Materla just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Perez tries to pull guard but Materla forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Perez gets underhooks to prevent Materla's takedown attempt.
Materla jumps guard but Perez stands there with Materla around his waist. Materla gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Alex Perez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Michal Materla.
Perez is looking for a takedown.
Materla prevents a takedown attempt there.
Materla lands an elbow inside.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Materla pulls guard successfully.

Perez has gone for a leg lock! Materla slips out almost immediately though and dives into Perez's guard.


Materla decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Perez, up you get!
Perez takes a body punch but keeps moving.
The fight stays on the outside here - Materla looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Michal Materla comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Materla has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
