PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mark Crew (ranked 4316 p4p, 4174 weight class) and Vesa Kulonummi (ranked 428 p4p, 421 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Vesa Kulonummi!
The judges for this bout are Sandra Marshall, Daniel Franklin and Santiago Holmes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kulonummi gets caught napping as Crew dives in and scores a takedown. Kulonummi manages to retain guard.
Crew wants to control from the top but Kulonummi keeps moving.
Crew is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Kulonummi is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Crew looking to sit in guard and control but Kulonummi gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Kulonummi got a little sloppy there for a moment and Crew has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Kulonummi has managed to get both his arms back between Crew's legs - danger averted.

Crew has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Kulonummi can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Crew is on top in guard.

Kulonummi really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Crew. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Crew postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Kulonummi is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Crew, into his guard.

Kulonummi tries to free his leg and advance position but Crew is retaining full guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Kulonummi postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Kulonummi stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Crew swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Crew is trying to control the position but Kulonummi postures up.

Kulonummi avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Crew looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Kulonummi wants to pass the guard but Crew is keeping the position.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Mark Crew will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the ring so we can get back down to business.


Crew gets the takedown into side control.
Kulonummi tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Crew wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Kulonummi stops Crew from passing to mount.

Crew tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Crew has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Crew wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Kulonummi, who protects the arm well.
Crew is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Kulonummi can do to turn this around?

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Crew is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Crew is looking to advance position but Kulonummi won't allow it.

Crew is looking for a kimura but Kulonummi is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Crew to get the leverage.
Crew wants to pass to mount but Kulonummi is defending the position.
Crew is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

Crew wants to finish this one by submission but Kulonummi is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Crew.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kulonummi bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Crew has his feet on Kulonummi's thighs here. He's pushed Kulonummi off and worked for a very quick armbar from the bottom! He's flipped onto his stomach and he's cranking hard on the arm! Kulonummi screams in pain and taps out! This one is all over!

After winning the bout, Mark Crew thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
