PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Stephen Burns (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Marco Pepinhos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pepinhos has chosen Macaco - Hacen Falta Dos as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Stephen Burns could well score a knockout today. He has the power to get to Marco Pepinhos's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Stephen Burns!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Marco Pepinhos!
The judges for this bout are Taro Takaoka, Kenichi Hosakawa and Shigeki Fujiwara.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Burns is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Pepinhos's half guard.

Burns is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Pepinhos defends it well.

Burns trying to work for an americana but Pepinhos has managed to regain full guard.

Burns gets to his feet. Pepinhos looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Burns shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Pepinhos as he avoids it easily.
Stephen Burns seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Pepinhos decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Burns tries to roll over but Pepinhos keeps him under control.

Burns is working hard here to advance position.
Burns works his way to full guard. Good work.

Pepinhos drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Pepinhos jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Burns is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Pepinhos dives into side control.
Burns tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Pepinhos wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Pepinhos tries for a kimura but Burns is defending well.
Burns looks to move to half guard but instead Pepinhos has passed into mount! Damn!
Burns tries to hold on but Pepinhos postures up.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Burns is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Pepinhos goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Burns is on top in guard.
Pepinhos looks gassed!

Burns is working Pepinhos over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Burns drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Pepinhos manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Burns has Pepinhos in his guard.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Pepinhos trying to control but Burns is working from the bottom.
Burns controls Pepinhos momentarily but Pepinhos frees himself.
Pepinhos trying to control the position from guard on top but Burns is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Burns is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Stephen Burns will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Burns doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Pepinhos counters with a single leg into guard. Burns didn't expect that.
Pepinhos trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Pepinhos with a flurry of punches that miss.
Burns looking for a sweep. Not yet Burns, not yet.

Pepinhos avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Pepinhos wants to control from the top but Burns keeps moving.
Pepinhos won't allow Burns to sweep him here.

Pepinhos throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Pepinhos must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Burns wants to stand up but Pepinhos is controlling him.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Burns misses with a takedown
and Pepinhos counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Pepinhos moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.

Pepinhos looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Pepinhos landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Burns tries to kick Pepinhos off in order to stand up. Pepinhos Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.

The strikes coming from Pepinhos are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Burns tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Pepinhos presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!

Pepinhos has control of Burns's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Burns regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Burns is trying desperately to improve position.
Burns slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.

Burns moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Pepinhos won't allow Burns to sweep him here.

Pepinhos drops back, looking for a kneebar! Burns looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Burns looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Burns!
Pepinhos can't do much from the bottom here.
Burns has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Pepinhos!

Burns stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.

Pepinhos gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Burns to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Marco Pepinhos showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Burns tries to clinch

and Pepinhos decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Burns's guard.
Burns is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Burns is stalling here. Pepinhos is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Burns seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Pepinhos has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Pepinhos is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Pepinhos takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Burns is trying to escape the mount.

Marco Pepinhos has got the better of the ground game so far.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Pepinhos lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Burns is in all sorts of trouble here.
Pepinhos wants to control the pace but Burns is squirming around nicely.
Burns is trying to escape the mount.
Burns is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Burns is wriggling around trying to escape.
Pepinhos in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Pepinhos blocks Burns's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.
Burns is looking to get to half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Pepinhos jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Burns is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Burns and Pepinhos has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

And that's the end of the fight!
Marco Pepinhos comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Pepinhos has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
