PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Andrew Chen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nick Diaz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Nick Diaz told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Andrew Chen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Nick Diaz!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Diaz lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Chen backs up against the cage.


It looks like Andrew Chen has been cut.
Chen circles away from the clinch attempt.
Diaz tries a head kick but it misses.
Chen avoids the head kick by Diaz.
Chen slips a jab from Diaz.

Chen shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Chen throwing shots but Diaz is blocking nicely.

Chen is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Chen is controlling the pace.
Chen wants to lay and pray for a moment but Diaz keeps working.

Chen controlling the pace.
Chen has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Chen prevents Diaz from standing back up.
Chen is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Diaz!

Chen working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
Chen takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Diaz avoids a series of strikes thrown by Chen.
Chen looking to control and managing it successfully.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Chen throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.
Diaz is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Diaz is in all sorts of trouble here.
Chen trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Diaz is looking to improve his position but Chen isn't that keen on the idea.
Diaz tries to hold on but Chen pushes him away.

Diaz is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Diaz flailing away with punches but nothing is landing.
Diaz's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.
Diaz is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Chen content just to control the position here.

Chen is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Diaz can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Andrew Chen will probably get the nod.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Diaz tries for a takedown but Chen circles away easily

and Chen counters with a takedown into side control.
Chen tries to advance to mount but can't.
Chen landing a few strikes.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Diaz is looking for a sweep.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Diaz is not content to let Chen control the position.

Chen is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Diaz knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Diaz tries to escape but Chen is in control.

Chen is looking to take a break and control but Diaz is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Diaz looks to land a combination. Chen sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Diaz is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Diaz fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Chen fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Diaz, pushing him back against the cage.

Chen has Diaz pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Chen pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Diaz tumbling to the mat - Chen dives into Diaz's guard.

Diaz wants to stand up but Chen is controlling him.
Chen is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Diaz is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Chen wants to control from the top but Diaz keeps moving.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Chen not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Diaz tries to clinch but Chen moves away

and Chen counters with a shoot takedown. Diaz fights it but they end up in guard.
Chen stopping the sweep attempt from Diaz.
Chen slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Andrew Chen dominated that second round.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Nice uppercut lands for Diaz. That snapped Chen's head back.
Diaz looks to clinch

and Chen counters with a nice double leg into side control. Diaz won't be happy with that.
Andrew Chen overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Diaz tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.
Diaz wants to control his opponent's hands but Chen gets his hands free.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Will Chen go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?

Diaz is really stuck here.

Diaz is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
Diaz tries to escape but Chen has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
Diaz is trying to stand back up.
Diaz tries to roll but Chen sticks to his back.

Chen working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.
Diaz trying to control the hands but Chen breaks the grip.

Diaz rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Diaz tries to kick Chen off but Chen keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Diaz is trying to escape back to his feet but Chen uses the scramble to pass into side control.

Diaz is trying to improve his position.
A lull in the action here as Chen stalls from top position.
Diaz is trying to buck Chen off.

Chen tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Chen has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

And that's the end of the fight!
Andrew Chen showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Chen, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
