PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Matthew Griffin (ranked 2645 p4p, 23934 weight class) and Justin Edwards (ranked 132 p4p, 358 weight class). Edwards has chosen "A Country Boy Can Survive" by Hank Williams Jr. as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Matthew Griffin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Justin Edwards!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Timothy Bukovac and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Griffin digs a good hook to Edwards's body.
Edwards wants to clinch up but Griffin keeps it at a distance.
Edwards steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Griffin.
Edwards shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Griffin counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Griffin swings and misses with a shot to the body
and Edwards counters with a series of strikes. Griffin will be more careful next time no doubt.
Edwards fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Griffin closes the distance and pushes Edwards back into the cage.

Griffin's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Edwards takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.
Griffin just misses with a punch to the body.
Griffin lands a leg kick that knocks Edwards off balance momentarily.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Griffin moves into the clinch.
Griffin tries to work over Edwards's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Griffin works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.

Griffin escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Edwards tries to keep at a distance but Griffin has taken the fight into the clinch.

Griffin manages to break the clinch.
Griffin clobbers Edwards with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Griffin dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Griffin throws a body punch but Edwards moves out of range.
Edwards fails to land the takedown.
Edwards tries to clinch but Griffin moves away
and Griffin counters with a body kick that stops Edwards in his tracks momentarily.
Griffin just misses with a punch to the body.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Edwards enables Griffin to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Edwards manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Griffin tries to free his leg and advance position but Edwards is retaining full guard.

Edwards looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Griffin is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Griffin stands up from Edwards's guard - Griffin perhaps looking for a knockout.
Edwards wants to clinch.
Edwards throws the kick towards the body but Griffin avoids it.
Griffin was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.
Edwards with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Griffin to score with a decent uppercut.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Griffin forces Edwards back against the cage and clinches.

It looks like Justin Edwards has been cut.
Edwards has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Griffin is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Edwards throws a series of strikes that have Griffin backpedaling.

It looks like Matthew Griffin has been cut.
Griffin throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Edwards stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Griffin throws a right and a left that Edwards avoids nicely.

Griffin tries to land knees in the clinch but Edwards avoids the damage to the body.

Griffin fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Edwards manages to avoid it.

Edwards takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Edwards looks for a takedown but Griffin sprawls well.
Griffin is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Edwards can do to turn this around?
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Griffin paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Griffin has been working on his balance at Gumburcules Gym, so perhaps that has help him stuff some of the takedown attempts by Edwards.

Edwards shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Griffin but Griffin pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Griffin seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.

Griffin rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Edwards moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Griffin feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Matthew Griffin overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Edwards takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Griffin shoots in and bounces Edwards off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Griffin jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Edwards walks away with a smile on his face. Griffin gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
