PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Nils Ragnaar (ranked 4723 p4p, 3202 weight class) and Leonardo Santos (ranked 464 p4p, 346 weight class). Ragnaar kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Mustasch - The Wave. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 28 - 24 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Nils Ragnaar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Leonardo Santos!
The judges for this bout are James Glass, Phil Schofield and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Santos has his takedown stuffed
and Santos takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Santos takes one on the chin but seems OK.
A low kick from Santos misses
and Ragnaar finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body.
Santos shoots in but no luck this time.
Ragnaar leaves Santos with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Ragnaar looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Nils Ragnaar has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Leonardo Santos.
Santos on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Ragnaar. Ragnaar obviously looking to wear him down.
Ragnaar lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Ragnaar lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Ragnaar lands a nice shot to the body.
A solid leg kick lands there for Ragnaar.
Ragnaar lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Santos looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Santos shoots in but no luck this time.
Ragnaar appeared to be looking to counter that last move with a leg kick.

Santos manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Ragnaar on his heels. He'll look to pass Ragnaar's guard now, I'm sure.

Santos seems to be looking for submissions.
Ragnaar tries to get to full guard but Santos has control of the leg.

Santos is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Ragnaar defends it well.
Santos is pressing down on Ragnaar's thigh, looking to free his foot. Ragnaar is holding on for now.

Santos is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Ragnaar on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Ragnaar tries to get out of the position.
Ragnaar tries to kick Santos off but Santos keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Santos is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Santos wants to work for an arm triangle but Ragnaar is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Santos is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Ragnaar defends it well.
Ragnaar is concentrating on defense, preventing Santos from advancing position.

Santos is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Santos trying to advance position but Ragnaar counters by regaining guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Santos pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Ragnaar is keeping the position for now.
Ragnaar is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Santos trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Santos looking to sit in guard and control but Ragnaar gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Ragnaar has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Santos is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Santos controls Ragnaar momentarily but Ragnaar frees himself.

Santos wants to sweep here but Ragnaar controlling him for the moment.

Santos looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Nils Ragnaar dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Santos shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Ragnaar but Ragnaar pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Ragnaar stuffs the takedown.
Ragnaar misses with a head kick.
Santos is trying hard to land a takedown here. Ragnaar sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Ragnaar cracks Santos with an open hand slap.
Ragnaar lands a nice looking body shot.

and Ragnaar makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Santos shoots in for a takedown but Ragnaar shows good takedown defense.
Santos changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Ragnaar tries to avoid it but Santos manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Ragnaar to the ground. Ragnaar escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Ragnaar lands a nice leg kick that just misses Santos's sensitive parts.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Santos on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Santos with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Ragnaar to score with a decent uppercut.
Ragnaar delivers a nice body kick.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Santos tries to score a power double leg takedown but Ragnaar sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Santos somewhat.
Nils Ragnaar seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Santos misses with a takedown attempt - Ragnaar sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Ragnaar is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Santos can do to turn this around?

Ragnaar stuns Santos with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Ragnaar scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Ragnaar comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Ragnaar's corner calls for a 1-2. Ragnaar obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Ragnaar pulls Santos in close to prevent any damage.
Santos forces his way into half guard.

Santos is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Ragnaar defends it well.
Santos is stalling here. Ragnaar is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Santos seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Ragnaar has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Santos is looking for a sweep.

Ragnaar decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Santos shoots in but Ragnaar avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Ragnaar scores with a jab. Santos acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Ragnaar is looking to slow Santos down with leg kicks.
Decent striking displayed by Ragnaar there.
Ragnaar stuffs the takedown attempt from Santos. Santos gets slowly back to his feet.
Santos has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Ragnaar finds it's way round the side to connect with Santos's head.
A solid leg kick lands there for Ragnaar.

Santos shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Ragnaar jabs Santos right on the nose. Santos blinks but takes it well.
A good leg kick by Ragnaar.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Santos crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Ragnaar - the referee stops the clock and Santos gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Ragnaar. Santos manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.
Ragnaar fakes the leg kick and cracks Santos in the body.
Ragnaar turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Santos's leg has a nasty welt from taking a succession of leg kicks. That must be slowing him down.
Ragnaar scores with a jab.
Santos tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Ragnaar defends well and Santos ends up having to push Ragnaar into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Santos takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Ragnaar is looking to slow Santos down with leg kicks.
Santos fails with the takedown
and Ragnaar counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Santos is breathing heavily.
Horrible takedown attempt by Santos or perhaps it was just good defense by Ragnaar, which made it look bad.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Nils Ragnaar dominated that second round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Jab, jab by Ragnaar - just one landing.
Ragnaar buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Ragnaar throws a nice inside leg kick.
Ragnaar throws a lazy head kick

and Santos counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Santos is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Santos drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Ragnaar manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Santos has Ragnaar in his guard.


Ragnaar got a little sloppy there for a moment and Santos has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Ragnaar has managed to get both his arms back between Santos's legs - danger averted.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Santos tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Santos looking to control but Ragnaar passes into half guard.
Santos holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Santos has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Ragnaar is working away from the top position though.
Santos wants to improve his position but Ragnaar is controlling well.
Well, if Ragnaar is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Santos tries to get to full guard but Ragnaar has control of the leg.
Ragnaar perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Santos controlling the leg, holding on to half guard.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters, thinking about a standup.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Santos trying to control but Ragnaar postures up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Santos tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
A shot to the liver by Ragnaar. Beautiful body shot.
Santos dives in for a single leg takedown but Ragnaar sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Santos takes a jab right on the kisser.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Santos.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Ragnaar wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Leonardo Santos has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Ragnaar lets loose with a powerful body kick. Santos will feel that in the morning.

And that's the end of the fight!
Nils Ragnaar showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Ragnaar, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
