PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Pika Kalei (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gordon Shumway (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Pika Kalei!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Gordon Shumway!
The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Leandro Rodrigues and Daniel Cesar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kalei uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Shumway.
Kalei throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Shumway fails with an attempt to clinch.
Shumway tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Kalei paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Kalei misses with a straight right.
Kalei blocks a jab.
Kalei moves into range and connects with a jab.
Shumway tries to clinch but Kalei is having none of it.
Shumway tries to land a front kick but Kalei steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Kalei fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Shumway manages to avoid it.
Kalei avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Shumway tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Kalei paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Shumway on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.

Kalei closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Kalei is looking for a kimura but Shumway is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Kalei to get the leverage.
Shumway is trying to maintain the position but Kalei is very close to passing his half guard.
Kalei not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

Shumway pushes Kalei off and gets back to his feet.

Kalei moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
Kalei misses with an uppercut.

Shumway closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Kalei lands a knee to the head.

Kalei ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Kalei no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Shumway is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Kalei is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Kalei has escaped and now he's on top!

Kalei is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Kalei lands a nice short elbow.
Kalei is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Kalei content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Kalei has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Shumway is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Kalei postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Kalei keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Shumway's head.

Shumway working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Kalei doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Kalei manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Shumway can't keep his opponent in guard - Kalei advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Kalei passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Shumway!

Kalei fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!

Kalei is going olschool here, as he tries to force Shumway to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Shumway shrugs it off.
Kalei postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Shumway looks a forlorn figure.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Shumway tries to hold on but Kalei postures up.
Shumway tries to get back to half guard but can't.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Pika Kalei dominated that round.

Kalei closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Kalei lands in his opponent's guard.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Kalei's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Shumway keeping moving, preventing Kalei from controlling successfully.
Kalei loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Kalei makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Kalei is pushing down on Shumway's leg trying to pass to half guard. Shumway is fighting to maintain full guard but Kalei has managed to sneak the leg through.

Kalei working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Kalei wants to take a breather but Shumway is having none of it.

Kalei connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Shumway some visible discomfort.

Shumway wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Shumway is bucking up trying to escape but Kalei cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
The referee warns Shumway that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

Kalei lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Kalei avoids the attempt from Shumway to control.

Shumway flails away from the bottom, looking to strike but he's give an arm to his opponent... uh oh. Kalei wraps up the arm in an instant and pivots for an armbar! Tap or snap time - Shumway decides to tap! Lovely submission by Kalei!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:41 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Pika Kalei!
