PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Tyree Johnson (ranked 4076 p4p, 4094 weight class) and Manny Rivera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tyree Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Manny Rivera!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Robert Twigg and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Rivera.

Johnson looking to score a takedown here. Rivera is defending well but Johnson drives through and ends up in Rivera's guard.
Rivera controls Johnson momentarily but Johnson frees himself.
Rivera is looking to sweep but instead, Johnson has passed into half guard.
Johnson throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Johnson in particular looking to stall.
Rivera keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Rivera tries to get to full guard but Johnson has control of the leg.
Johnson really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Rivera tries to roll over but Johnson keeps him under control.
Rivera has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Johnson is working away from the top position though.
Johnson is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Rivera wants to control but Johnson is keeping busy.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Rivera shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Johnson pinned against the cage. Johnson gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Rivera tries to clinch up but Johnson circles away and keeps his distance.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Johnson finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.

Rivera moves into the clinch.
Johnson has Rivera pushed against the cage.
Johnson looking for a takedown.
Rivera is pressed up against the cage. Johnson has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Rivera down to the mat. Rivera avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Johnson clinches.
Rivera tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

Rivera wants the takedown. Johnson is fighting it off but Rivera persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Johnson's guard against the cage.

Johnson has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Rivera has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Rivera gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Johnson.

Rivera misses with a knee to the head.
Rivera wants a takedown.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Rivera is trying to maintain a safe position but Johnson gets an underhook and turns Rivera into the cage.

Johnson moves into the clinch.
Johnson jumps guard but Rivera stands there with Johnson around his waist. Johnson gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Rivera displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Johnson.
As Johnson backs off Rivera throws a huge counter combo but Johnson manages to avoid it all.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Rivera scores with a crisp jab that stopped Johnson in his tracks.
Rivera shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Johnson defends it nicely.
Johnson lands a lovely overhand right.
Rivera scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rivera lands with a kick to the ribs.
Horrible takedown attempt by Johnson or perhaps it was just good defense by Rivera, which made it look bad.
Johnson closes the distance looking to clinch
and Rivera counters with a one-two to the body.

Johnson throws the kick towards the body but Rivera avoids it.
Rivera throws a one two combo.
Rivera misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Rivera tries to score a power double leg takedown but Johnson sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Rivera somewhat.
Tyree Johnson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Manny Rivera.
Johnson tries for a takedown but Rivera sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Rivera gets tackled into the cage by Johnson. Johnson maintains the clinch.
Rivera jumps guard but Johnson turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Johnson gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Rivera regains guard.
Rivera is striking from the bottom but Johnson uses the opportunity to pass into half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Rivera wants to improve his position but Johnson is controlling well.

Rivera tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Johnson presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
Johnson sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
Rivera tries to hold on but Johnson pushes him away.
Johnson will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Johnson thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

Johnson throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Rivera is looking to get to half guard.
Rivera wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Johnson.

Johnson is standing up, even though he is in mount.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Rivera leaves Johnson with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Johnson avoids the body shot from Rivera.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Tyree Johnson will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!

Johnson looks to land a combination but Rivera avoids it well.
Rivera throws a head kick that half lands.
Johnson avoids a kick to the body.
Rivera dives in and grabs Johnson's left leg, looking for a takedown. Johnson pushes down on Rivera's head and hops out.
Tyree Johnson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Rivera thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Johnson if he has to take too many more of those.
Johnson doesn't manage to clinch there - Rivera circles away.
Johnson shoots in for a takedown but Rivera shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Rivera looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.

Johnson has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Rivera after a bit of a struggle.

Rivera throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Johnson.
Rivera lands with a kick to the temple. Johnson shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Rivera. Johnson shrugs it off though.

Johnson tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Rivera just stands there and leans against the cage.
Rivera connects with a nasty looking knee right to Johnson's face.

Rivera goes for a takedown attempt but Johnson pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Rivera takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
And Rivera tries to counter it with a takedown but Johnson pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Johnson throws an overhand right that lands on Rivera's shoulder, as Rivera tries to avoid the shot.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Rivera throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body.
Johnson tries to clinch up.

Rivera feints and as Johnson raises his hands in defense, Rivera changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Johnson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Rivera must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Rivera trying to control but Johnson is working from the bottom.
Rivera might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Johnson haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Johnson tries to land a sweep but no joy.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Johnson had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Rivera defends it easily.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Rivera throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Johnson.
Rivera throws a head kick that half lands.
Rivera connects with a high kick.
Rivera throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Rivera lands with a slapping head kick.
A left and a right from Rivera both land. Nice combination.
Rivera shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Johnson defends it nicely.

And that's the end of the fight!
Manny Rivera comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Johnson has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
