PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Damian Dilbrandt (ranked 2711 p4p, 23263 weight class) and Kyrillos Popov (ranked 265 p4p, 440 weight class). The key to victory for Damian Dilbrandt has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Damian Dilbrandt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Kyrillos Popov!
The judges for this bout are Johanna Lukiainen, Anni Minnemäki and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Popov throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Dilbrandt appears to be looking for a big counter.

Popov shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Popov controlling the action here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
It looks like Popov might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Popov is working for a kimura but Dilbrandt is defending it quite comfortably.

Popov is looking to advance position but Dilbrandt won't allow it.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Popov slows the pace down in half guard.
Dilbrandt has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Popov is working away from the top position though.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Popov on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.

Kyrillos Popov seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Dilbrandt wants to get back to striking at distance but Popov won't allow it.

Popov manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Dilbrandt stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Popov swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Popov is pulling down on Dilbrandt's head to control his posture.
Dilbrandt is looking to work some ground and pound but Popov has wrist control.
Popov is adopting a defensive guard.

Dilbrandt got a little sloppy there for a moment and Popov has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Dilbrandt has managed to get both his arms back between Popov's legs - danger averted.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Popov takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.

Popov shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Dilbrandt manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Dilbrandt wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Popov manages to pass to side control.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Dilbrandt has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Popov is working away from the top position though.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Popov in particular looking to stall.

Popov perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Popov content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Popov clinches with his opponent.
Popov tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Dilbrandt smiles and moves away.
Popov closes the distance and clinches up with Dilbrandt, looking for a takedown. Popov pushes Dilbrandt against the cage but Dilbrandt circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Dilbrandt throws a looping overhand right but Popov ducks down to avoid it.

and Dilbrandt counters with a nice uppercut.

Dilbrandt swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Popov with the counter takedown but Dilbrandt avoids it easily.
Dilbrandt attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Damian Dilbrandt is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Dilbrandt wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Dilbrandt connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Popov momentarily.
Popov checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
Dilbrandt doesn't manage to clinch there - Popov circles away.
Dilbrandt lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.

Dilbrandt has his feet on Popov's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Popov goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

Popov on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Dilbrandt. Dilbrandt obviously looking to wear him down.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Popov breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Popov holds on and takes a little breather.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Popov tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Popov has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Popov misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Popov postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Dilbrandt is being controlled here.
Popov throws an elbow but Dilbrandt slips to the side and avoids it well.
Dilbrandt is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Popov tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Popov misses with a body kick.
Popov takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Dilbrandt lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Popov misses with a takedown
and Dilbrandt counters with a straight right hand.
Damian Dilbrandt is winning the standup battle so far.
Popov has a takedown stuffed.
Dilbrandt connects with a good right hand that stumbles Popov. Popov circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Popov changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Dilbrandt tries to avoid it but Popov manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Dilbrandt to the ground. Dilbrandt escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Damian Dilbrandt has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kyrillos Popov.
