PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gerard Messing (ranked 2872 p4p, 2168 weight class) and Paavo Vayrynen (ranked 346 p4p, 258 weight class). Paavo Vayrynen told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Gerard Messing!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Paavo Vayrynen!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Ian Loll and Steve Smith.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vayrynen swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Messing drops down looking for a counter takedown but Vayrynen sprawls and moves away.
Vayrynen keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Messing scores with a jab. Vayrynen acknowledges it with a nod of the head.

It looks like Paavo Vayrynen has been cut.
Messing stuffs the takedown attempt from Vayrynen. Vayrynen gets slowly back to his feet.
Vayrynen uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Messing.
Vayrynen takes a swing at Messing's ribcage but misses.
Vayrynen fails with an attempt to clinch.
Messing lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Vayrynen circles away quickly and effectively.
Vayrynen looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Vayrynen bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Messing's head.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Vayrynen swings widly with a right hand

and Messing counters with a single leg into guard. Vayrynen didn't expect that.
Messing working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.

Vayrynen looking for a guillotine here but Messing defends easily.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Messing trying to control the position from guard on top but Vayrynen is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Vayrynen utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Messing sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Vayrynen's guard.
Vayrynen has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Messing is working away from the top position though.
Messing not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Vayrynen wants to control but Messing is keeping busy and won't allow it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Messing working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Vayrynen's thigh. Vayrynen counters though and makes it back to full guard.
We've been hearing that Messing has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.

Vayrynen looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Messing has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Vayrynen to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Messing is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Vayrynen pulls down on the head and he's put Messing to sleep! This one is all over!
