PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Journey Sky (ranked 724 p4p, 958 weight class) and Bubba Rolls (ranked 107 p4p, 138 weight class). Rolls has chosen Moonshine Bandits - For The Outlawz as his entrance music. Bubba Rolls told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Journey Sky!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Bubba Rolls!
The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, Daniel Bishop and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sky throws a front kick aimed at Rolls's knee but Rolls avoids it well.
Sky takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Sky has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Outlaw MMA in the buildup to the fight.
Rolls misses with a right hand
and Sky counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Sky avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Rolls lands a head shot.
Sky throws a right hand that misses
and Rolls cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
We've been informed that Rolls has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result.
Sky takes one to the chin there.
Rolls takes a body punch but keeps moving.

It looks like Bubba Rolls has been cut.

A looping hook to the body misses from Sky. Rolls does a little dance to reset his feet.

Rolls thuds his right hand into Sky's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

A nice leg kick from Sky, right into the meat of the thigh.

and Sky counters with a nice uppercut.
Rolls might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.

Sky swings for the body but Rolls moves out of range.
Rolls lands with an uppercut that bounces Sky off the cage and back into range.
Sky throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Rolls sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Rolls looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Rolls misses with a left hand
and Sky connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
A decent looking cross lands there for Sky.
Journey Sky is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Bubba Rolls seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sky misses with an uppercut.
Sky has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Rolls finds it's way round the side to connect with Sky's head.
Sky lands a jab to the head.

Rolls defending well as Sky loads up on a big left hand.

Rolls looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Rolls uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Sky.

and Sky counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Rolls ducks under a wild hook from Sky.

Rolls feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Rolls is stalling in the full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sky wants to stand but Rolls is controlling the position.

Rolls trying to control but Sky is working from the bottom.
Sky wants to stand and escape but Rolls is having none of it.
Rolls slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Sky is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Rolls is controlling him.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Sky misses with a looping right.

Rolls rushes Sky and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Rolls blocks an uppercut.
Rolls wants to take the fight to the mat but Sky manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Rolls swings away with an uppercut that misses.
A short right hand to the side of the head by Sky.
Sky misses with a shot to the kidneys.
A quick uppercut on the inside from Sky.

Rolls jumps guard and drags Sky to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Sky wants to stand but Rolls has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Sky decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Sky scores with a shot to the body.
Rolls throws a hook but Sky avoids it easily.
Sky is really peppering his opponent's head with punches.
Sky looks to land a right hand but Rolls moved out of range.
Rolls is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Sky with a body shot.
Rolls lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Journey Sky dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Bubba Rolls's cut.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Rolls misses with a straight right.
Sky's jab looks to have found its range, popping Rolls under the eye.
Rolls's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Sky connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Rolls scrambles back to his feet.
Rolls tries to clinch but Sky is having none of it.

Rolls closes the distance and clinches.

Rolls has clasped his hands together around Sky's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Rolls wants to lay and pray for a moment but Sky keeps working.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rolls happy to just control the position for now.
Rolls prevents Sky from escaping the position.

Sky tries to escape back to his feet but Rolls has kept hold of him... Oh, now he's got Sky's back and is looking for the choke... Is it? Is it sunk in? YES! Sky is tapping! Rolls saw the opportunity and took it - ruthless!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:18 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Bubba Rolls!
A relieved looking Bubba Rolls thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
