PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Joe Swick (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Teppo Puukko (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Joe Swick!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Teppo Puukko!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Matti Vanhoillinen and Ben Zyskovitsi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Puukko shoots in and bounces Swick off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Puukko stands and steps away. Swick gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
A punch combination from Puukko misses.
Puukko fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Swick tries to clinch but Puukko is having none of it.
Swick pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Swick moves in looking to clinch but Puukko pushes him off.
Swick lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Puukko circles away quickly and effectively.
Puukko shoots in but Swick avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Puukko fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Joe Swick has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Teppo Puukko.
Puukko misses with a takedown attempt - Swick sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Swick jabbing away but nothing is landing.

Puukko shoots in but Swick avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Puukko keeps the fight on the outside.
Puukko tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Swick counters with a body kick that stops Puukko in his tracks momentarily.
Swick keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Puukko shoots for a double leg takedown but Swick sprawls well. He's pushed Puukko's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Puukko looks gassed!
Swick changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Puukko tries to avoid it but Swick manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Puukko to the ground. Puukko escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

and Puukko counters with a single leg into guard. Swick didn't expect that.
Puukko wants to control from the top but Swick keeps moving.

Swick is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Swick controls Puukko momentarily but Puukko frees himself.

Puukko drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Swick manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Puukko has Swick in his guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Puukko can do anything to dispel that myth.

Puukko has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Swick is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Puukko.

Swick wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Puukko, who protects the arm well.

Swick is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Puukko has escaped the position, nice work there.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Puukko gets back to half guard.
Swick seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Puukko does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Puukko is looking to improve his position.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Swick controlling the action here.

Swick wants to control from the top but Puukko keeps moving.

Puukko is looking for a triangle but Swick pushes his legs off easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Swick's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Swick throws a sloppy head kick and Puukko moves out of range easily.
Puukko wants to clinch but Swick slips to the side
and Swick counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Puukko rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Swick moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Swick fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Swick closes the distance and pushes Puukko back into the cage.

Swick breaks from the clinch.
Nice takedown defense from Swick. No joy for Puukko on that attempt.
Swick tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Puukko fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Swick sprawls well initially but Puukko persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Puukko is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
The fighters are battling for position here. Swick manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Swick looking to control.
Swick knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Puukko on the ground.

Swick pushes Puukko off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Swick fails in his attempt to clinch.
Swick throws a left and a right that both miss

and Puukko counters with a shoot takedown. Swick fights it but they end up in guard.

Puukko has gone for a leg lock! Swick slips out almost immediately though and dives into Puukko's guard.

Puukko escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Swick gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Swick wants to pass the guard but Puukko is keeping the position.
Swick passes into half guard.
Puukko wants to get back to full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Swick closes the distance and clinches.
Puukko stops a takedown attempt from Swick.
Puukko tries to pull guard but Swick holds him up against the cage and eventually Puukko drops back down to his feet.
Puukko has had enough of the clinch but Swick keeps him there for the moment.

Swick gets control of Puukko's arms and successfully pulls guard. Swick will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Swick lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Puukko!

Puukko tries to lock up and control but Swick gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Swick wants to control the pace but Puukko is squirming around nicely.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Joe Swick will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Swick lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Puukko doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Swick moves into the clinch.
Swick changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Puukko fights it off and pushes away nicely.

and Puukko decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Swick's guard.

Swick is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Swick is looking for a sweep. Puukko is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Puukko is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Swick doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Puukko.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Teppo Puukko comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Puukko has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
