PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Dean Capes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Austin Powers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Dean Capes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Austin Powers!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Bishop, Sam Margolis and James Atkins.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Capes lands a head shot.
Powers has a takedown stuffed.

Capes closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Powers stalling against the cage.
Powers trying to control the position but instead, Capes has worked for underhooks and has pushed Powers into the cage.
Capes keeps control of Powers as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Capes lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Capes looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Capes trying to control from half guard but Powers is working away.
Capes passes to full mount!
Powers tries to reverse the position but Capes maintains control.

That's one minute gone in the round.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Powers wants to try and get back to his feet.
Capes tries to control but Powers wriggling away.
Powers is in all sorts of trouble here.
Capes trying to control but Powers is having none of it.

Capes goes for an armbar but Powers turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Powers.
Capes wants to sweep but no luck.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Capes is working hard here to advance position.
Capes is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Powers won't allow Capes to sweep him here.
Powers trying to control but Capes is working from the bottom.
Capes has a closed guard, preventing Powers from standing up.
Capes lands a good elbow from the bottom.
Powers trying to stand up but can't free himself from Capes's guard.
Powers looks gassed!

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Capes instigates a clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Capes blocks a body shot from Powers.
Capes goes for a takedown in the clinch but Powers prevents it.
A frustrated look appears on Powers's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Powers is trying to break the clinch but Capes is controlling him.
Capes is trying to drag Powers to the mat but Powers just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Powers is looking to control Capes's arms but Capes gets an underhook and turns him. Now Powers has his back to the cage.

Capes escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Capes throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Powers was covering up waiting for the punch and Capes finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Capes throws and elbow that misses. Powers uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Capes's guard. Nice move by Powers!
Powers wants to control from the top but Capes keeps moving.
Powers wants to pass the guard but Capes is keeping the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Capes working a defensive guard here.
Capes tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Capes trying to control the position.
Capes tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Capes escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Powers gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Capes closes the distance and clinches.
Capes softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dean Capes dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Powers with a lazy takedown attempt

and Capes counters with a shoot takedown. Powers fights it but they end up in guard.
Capes wants to pass the guard but Powers is keeping the position.
Powers trying to strike off his back.
Capes postures up and lands a big shot to Powers's brow.
Capes lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Capes trying to control the position from guard on top but Powers is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Capes slips nicely into half guard.
Capes wants to control but Powers is keeping him busy.
Capes is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Capes knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Powers on the ground.
Powers is breathing heavily.
Powers trying to control here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Powers is refusing to be controlled, as Capes sits in half guard.
Capes missing with the ground and pound from half guard.

Capes is looking for a kimura but Powers is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Capes to get the leverage.
Capes not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Capes gets the takedown into side control.
Capes tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
Capes trying to control the action but Powers is working from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Capes tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Capes has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Capes is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Powers is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Capes decides to stand back up.
Powers tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Capes counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Capes lands a nice short elbow.
Capes thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Powers is refusing to be controlled, as Capes sits in half guard.
Capes is nestled in close to Powers, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Capes wants to control but Powers is keeping him busy.
Powers wants to improve his position but Capes is controlling well.
Capes slows the pace down in half guard.
Capes works his foot free and advances to mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Capes breaks from Powers's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Capes wants to control the pace but Powers is squirming around nicely.
Capes lands with some strikes.
Capes takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Capes has control of Powers's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Powers regains control of the situation pretty easily.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Capes can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Powers is looking to escape.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Capes closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Powers to the mat! Powers manages to get full guard.
Powers tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Capes scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Powers wants to sweep but no luck.

Capes got a little sloppy there for a moment and Powers has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Capes has managed to get both his arms back between Powers's legs - danger averted.
Powers takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Capes tries to free his leg and advance position but Powers is retaining full guard.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Capes fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Powers sprawls well initially but Capes persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Powers is not content to let Capes control the position.
Capes controlling the action here.
Capes trying to mount his opponent but Powers defends it.

Capes is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Capes wants to take a breather but Powers is having none of it.

Powers is in trouble now - Capes has advanced to mount!
Capes raining down shots from the mount!
Capes can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Powers is looking to escape.

Capes wants to control the pace but Powers is squirming around nicely.

Capes lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Dean Capes is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Powers is squirming around, avoiding Capes's attempts to control the action.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Dean Capes just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Capes has closed the distance and engaged Powers in a clinch.

Capes breaks the clinch.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Capes.
Capes looks for the body kick but Powers saw that one coming.

Capes has managed to clinch.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Capes successfully pulls guard.
Capes is pulling down on Powers's head to control his posture.
Austin Powers has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

And that's the end of the fight!
Dean Capes showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Capes has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
