PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between David Weller (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Denis Kang (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kang comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Enter the Dragon kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! David Weller has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, David Weller!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Denis Kang!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Donald Grub and Paul Tew.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Weller will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Kang keeps the fight on the outside.
Weller tries to close the distance and clinch but Kang swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Weller is looking to clinch.
Weller shoots in for a takedown but Kang shows good takedown defense.
Weller thuds his shin into the meat of Kang's side.

Kang gets a clinch.
Weller crunches a lovely knee into Kang's ribcage.
Kang looks gassed!

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Weller is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Weller breaks the clinch.
Weller thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Kang if he has to take too many more of those.

Weller throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Weller using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Kang has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Weller escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
David Weller seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Weller throws a head kick that looked like it stung.

Weller will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Kang up against the cage.

Weller is looking to control Kang's arms but Kang gets an underhook and turns him. Now Weller has his back to the cage.
Kang pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.

Kang wants to break the clinch but can't.
Weller unloads a knee to the mid-section. Kang lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.

Weller has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Weller has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Kang is proving hard to escape from.
Kang working a defensive guard but Weller manages to pass into side control anyway.

Kang moves into the clinch.

Weller pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

and Kang counters with a takedown into side control.
Weller is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Kang has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Kang thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Weller defending against the ground and pound.
Weller regains half guard there - taking advantage of Kang's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.
Kang wants to control but Weller is keeping him busy.

Weller has one foot on Kang's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Weller closes this distance looking for a takedown but Kang circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for David Weller. That's going to take a lot out of him.

so Kang counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Kang is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Weller is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Weller keeping moving, preventing Kang from controlling successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Weller's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Weller tries to clinch

and Kang counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Weller misses with a knee to the head.
Kang jumps guard but Weller stands there with Kang around his waist. Kang gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Weller is looking to control Kang's arms but Kang gets an underhook and turns him. Now Weller has his back to the cage.
Weller gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Kang lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
Kang is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
Weller throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Kang blocks it with crossed arms.

Weller wants to break free but Kang has control.
Weller tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kang is leaning against Weller and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.
Weller connects with a knee to the head.
Weller throws a knee to the head but misses.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Weller tries to land a knee to the head but Kang blocks with his arms.

Kang is trying to drag Weller to the mat but Weller just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Weller can't seem to implement his control oriented gameplan at the moment. That's no bad thing of course, for those of us who want to see a good fight.

Kang presses Weller against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.

Kang ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Kang no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Kang is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Weller is trying to stand up here but Kang is controlling him well.
Weller is refusing to be controlled, as Kang sits in half guard.

Kang is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Weller is just riding it out for now. Kang eventually gives up the hold.

Kang is working for a submission of some sort.

Kang looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Weller wants to get back to his feet.
Weller pushes Kang off but Kang dives into side control.
Weller is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Kang asserts his dominance and retains side control.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Weller clinches but Kang breaks the clinch

and Kang counters with a single leg into guard. Weller didn't expect that.

Kang has gone for a leg lock! Weller slips out almost immediately though and dives into Kang's guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Kang throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Kang not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Kang is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Weller is looking to stand up but Kang won't let him.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Denis Kang showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Weller closes the distance but Kang moves to the side

and Kang decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Weller's guard.

Kang stands up from Weller's guard - Kang perhaps looking for a knockout.

and Kang counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Weller has his feet on Kang's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Weller throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Kang.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Kang shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Weller pinned against the cage. Weller gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Weller tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Weller misses with a knee strike.
Kang throws a knee to the head but misses.

Weller breaks from the clinch.
Weller lands with a nice body kick.
Weller lands a head kick!

Kang bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Kang trying to control the action but Weller is working from the bottom.
Weller is trying to get back to his feet.

Kang working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.

Kang is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Weller is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Kang tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Kang has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Kang wants to lay and pray for a moment but Weller keeps working.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kang taking a break here but Weller is having none of it and regains half guard.
Weller wants to get back to his feet.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Kang shoots in but no luck this time.
Kang on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Weller. Weller obviously looking to wear him down.
Weller throws a head kick that half lands.
Weller tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Kang paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Weller throws a nice outside leg kick.

Weller doesn't manage to clinch there - Kang circles away.

A solid leg kick lands there for Weller.
Kang throws a right and a left that Weller avoids nicely.
Weller ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Weller shoots in looking for a takedown. Kang tries to sprawl out of it but Weller keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Kang manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Kang fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Weller sprawls well initially but Kang persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kang wants to control but Weller is keeping him busy.

Kang wants to work for an arm triangle but Weller is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Weller wants to get back to his feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
Denis Kang comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Kang has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
