The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Tonney working a defensive guard but Palvivaara passes into half guard.
Tonney pushes Palvivaara off looking to stand but Palvivaara dives back in and keeps control.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Tonney misses with a series of wild punches.

Tonney throws an overhand right that lands on Palvivaara's shoulder, as Palvivaara tries to avoid the shot.

Palvivaara shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Tonney is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Palvivaara has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Palvivaara sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
Palvivaara connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Tonney is trying to get back to his feet but can't.

Tonney wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Palvivaara.
Palvivaara throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Tonney because Palvivaara loaded up on that one.
Tonney wants to hold on but Palvivaara pushes him away.
Palvivaara cracks Tonney with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

It looks like James Tonney has been cut.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Tonney is in a horrible position here. Palvivaara smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
