The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cotes is trying hard to land a takedown here. simpson sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
simpson slaps away a takedown attempt from Cotes, before circling back to the center of the mat.
simpson comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

Excellent takedown into side control there by simpson.

Cotes sneaks out the side door and pushes simpson away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

Cotes is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
simpson is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Cotes will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

and simpson counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Cotes's guard now.

Cotes tries to land a sweep but no joy.
simpson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cotes swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Cotes tries to close the distance and clinch up but simpson swats him away and circles back towards the center.

simpson is looking to break free of the clinch but Cotes has double underhooks.

simpson wants to get back to striking at distance but Cotes won't allow it.

Cotes shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says simpson as he avoids it easily.

simpson closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - simpson lands in his opponent's guard.
